Default control surface/digital mixer suggestions?

Hello,

I'd like to solicit some opinions on what tactile interface might fit
my needs best. That is, I guess I'd like to hear about experiences
both good and bad some of you may have had with the various products
available.

First off, I use nuendo (2.0). I'd like to find something that
interfaces well with this. I want something that *feels* good to
use....that is, I don't want anything obviously flimsy.

Beyond that, I don't think I have any requirements. I suppose, the
more faders the better...but as long as it is fairly intuitive I
imagine having a limited number of faders that can be swithced between
'banks' would be fine.

Also, I could find a use for many of the extra features moving to a
digital mixer would provide....particularly if it had ADAT I/O.

Looking around it appears as if there are several options, so any help
that can be offered to trim out the obviously bad choices would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

My favorite digital console is the Yamaha series, particular the promix 01,
it's only 16 channels wich may crimp your style... It does have flying
faders automation, and built in effects and adat interfaces through yamaha's
proprietary interfaces.

Chris,

Thanks for responding.

I didn't say so explicitly, which I probably should have, but my
intent is to use it primarily as a control surface. Most of my use
would be mixing in the box with nuendo.

Have you used the yamaha for this?

I have to admit the yamahas are attractive. If I can get a usable
control surface AND have the extra I/O I'd be happy....and having the
option to occasionaly actually use it to mix would be fantastic.
However, if it didn't work well as a control surface for nuendo I'd
have spent more for something I only found useful once in a while.

I used to have a Yamaha 03D, which is basically a nice 24 channel "02R Lite"
with 16 faders that toggle between Ch. 1-16 and 17-24 and the 8 output
busses (4 group, 4 aux sends). The problem with the faders is that,
although they feel solid, when using the motorized automation, they tend to
have a jittering quality to them. I always assumed these were the same
faders on the subsequent 01V and 01V 96K, although that last one apparently
has a control template specifically for Nuendo. The 01V 96K is probably a
96K lite, 48K dedicated mixer, and goes for about $2200. The
reverb/multifx, EQ, Dynamics in the 03D were average to pretty good, maybe
the might be better in the 01V 96K.

For the cost, I suspect there are better control surfaces out there that
work much better for your app, and you are not "wasting" money on additional
features that you don't really need. Would the AD/DA's on a Yamaha mixer be
any better than what you are currently using to get into Nuendo?
