I have seen people ruin more Weller handles with wet sponges than I
can count. The thermal shock does them in. I use a dry piece of
paper towel
and have yet to have a failure of the handle.

Huh? I've been using wet sponge for decades and still using
some Weller irons that are nearly 30 years old.
Wet sponge is standard in industry AFAIK.

Of course if people are applying it to the shank (rather than
just the TIP), maybe that could account for your observation.

The people that encounter the most failures give the shank a good
healthy sizzle down. They like hearing the sizzle and see the steam
apparantly.

****s............

I just wipe off the tip on the sponge, and I've used the same Weller
TCP-1 for thirty years. Not the same tip, of course! :-)

I think you summed up my feelings as well Stewart. These aren't the
brightest bulbs on the tree either. I remember one guy that spent 1.5
days troubleshooting a 3/4" Umatic VCR. He was stuck and he finally asked
me to look at it. I walked over to it, tried to give the idler a spin
with my finger and it spun freely. I told him that had he put a new belt
in it, he would have saved a lot of time and aggravation. He didn't make
it as a tech. His buddy the boss tried to save his job but his gross
incompetance ultimatly prevailed. Same guy went through about one handle
a month. My Weller has been going strong for the past 15 years. New
tips, yes, but the same handle.
