Not going into a legal discussions re bootlegs, here is what I do with excessive handclapping: I have a friend composer and often he records his pieces at performance, sitting somewhere in front rows and using a Sony MD/stereo mic combination. So the handclapping is sometimes very loud as the people nearby are of course unaware that he's recording. I transfer the thing in the Sound Forge, search for those handclap peaks (easy to find) and, extending (zooming in) the waveform to the sample level, mark the most prominent and reduce its volume for -3 dB. It works good indeed but this is a pure manufacture work. Oh yes, to avoid any additional clicks, you should select the peak at a zero crossings or as close to it as it goes, left and right.
