OK, I've never worked in a major studio, so
I'm looking for a reality check. On American Idol the other night Jimmy Iovine said he fired 110 assistants in three years. (Seemingly for having the vocals too low.) [OK, American Idol/Reality non sequitur noted.] Questions: [1] Is Jimmy Iovine THAT good? [2] Is the help THAT bad? [3] How does anyone get anything done with that kind of turn over rate? [4] Any other reality checks, etc.? == Later... Ron Capik -- |

I would count myself damn lucky if he ever wanted to produce anything I was involved with, so that's my reality check. Sean |

Examine the man's credits, then let's all talk our action. Get work at that level and then find an assistant that meets our own standard. Most of those came out of some audio school where their parents overpaid for a mediocre technical education. Understand that at the highest levels of the pop music industry, company execs, who are often also producers, are sometimes not nice guys. No big surprise there. -- shut up and play your guitar * http://hankalrich.com/ http://hankandshaidrimusic.com/ http://www.youtube.com/walkinaymusic |

I never said he didn't have serious credentials. Just wondering if 110 fired assistants in 3 years, is typical and if so why? If those schools are that bad why would they hire so many of their grads just to fire them a few days later? Anyway, I'm guessing you'd vote yes to: [2] Is the help THAT bad? == Later... I think it's a perfect storm of factors, including [2}, Ron. That work is loaded with tiny details. One mistake is usually enough to allow one's dismissal. And maybe he was just bragging. g -- shut up and play your guitar * http://hankalrich.com/ http://hankandshaidrimusic.com/ http://www.youtube.com/walkinaymusic |

I'd fire most of his engineers for having the Auto-Tune turned too high. (And they aren't responsible for that, either.) Jimmy is an extremely-aware former-engineer/producer/exec, so he does know the technical end very well (going back 40 years). I'm hoping he said this just to be controversial and wacky. On the other hand, he's one of the brains behind Dr. Dre's "Beats" headphones, so you gotta wonder what Iovine thinks sounds good these days (from a strictly technical perspective). --MFW |

I apologize for this in advance, but it's the closest thing to a reproducible definition of "asshole" I ever ran into: "If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you’re the asshole." -Raylan Givens, Justified I expect that was at least approved by Elmore Leonard, so it's worth listening to... -- Les Cargill |

One of the interesting things about the music business is that it has a tendency to accept assholes at all levels. This is not always a bad thing although it can sometimes seem that way when you're having to work with such or have one work for you. In the end, what matters is that the job gets done. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
