I don't know how many of you follow the American Idol show on Fox (it's the
only Fox program I watch any more) but I began watching last year when it produced two really good singers, my favorite, Clay Aiken, coming in second. His first CD is definitely worth a listen. And the talent pool was huge that year - four of the top finalists have produced albums already. But this year? There are only two singers who belonged on the show, IMHO. Far and away, LaToya London was the best, and the little 16 year old blond girl was a distant second. No one else was even close, throughout the entire competition. Who gets voted off tonight? LaToya! Yeah, right. For some reason, Fantasia has been promoted and swooned over by the judge's panel and Brian Seacrest, the MC, for months, but she should have been eliminated months ago. Yet she's one of the last three standing. Go figure. She has no sense of pitch at all, is constantly out of tune, and has a voice that sounds worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. One judge, and only one, Simon Cowell, really got it right when he said a week or so ago that she sounded "like Donald Duck on helium". LaToya, on the other hand, has perfect pitch, a sweet, lovely voice, range, can hold a note longer than any in the competition, and has by far the best stage presence and dance moves. Looks like the old "fair and balanced" Fox fix is in (and we were led to believe it's all determined by public voting). Thanks a bunch, Rupert Murdoch, you're not only a tinhorn, you also have a tin ear. After tonight, it's a fair and balanced prediction that Fantasia will be Rupe the rube's pick as "American Idol". I'm willing to bet LaToya will be the one with the big musical contracts in the future, and the sales of her CD's will be comparable to the sales of Clay Aiken. I'm looking forward to buying and listening to her first album. Color me disgusted. |
