On the Tom Dowd DVD, he says, that the end section was recorded 3 weeks
after the "song".
That's the best reason to keep this thread going, at least another couple of
weeks.

Oops, sorry. Didn't mean to step on anyone's tail.
(Dang! There I go again, inadvertently insulting my fellow r.a.p.sters
again. The boy just can't help it. :)

Seriously Tracy, I don't think we even disagree about anything. I
can't imagine that you actually believe that any English speaking buyer
of the record didn't get that "It's about some guy howling in pain
about some chick Layla."
I never contended that the lyric was the main reason anyone bought the
record, just that it's a solid lyric, and one of many reasons people
like the song. The primary reason is probably the opening Duanne
Allman guitar lick. Which probably still annoys Clapton every time he
has to play it! :)
Cheers, Rick.
P.S. I don't know about anyone else, but I think this thread has just
about beat itself into the dirt. That's it for me. R.N.

BTW - I've never heard a really clean, dynamic version of this song - does
one exist? Like Heros and Villians by the Beach Boys, 'Layla' always had a
mushy sound. Is it the recording, the mix or the master? Who knows huh?

On vinyl, I always preferred the ATCO over the Polydor.

ON CD, I like the old mix, Original Master version.

At the time of its release, I seriously doubt that much of the record
buying public gave a crap what the song was about.

If I recall, it took two years for that album to become successful -
from 1970 to 1972.

I watched that movie for the gazillionth time last night, but watched
some of the "extras" for the first time.

I just got the surround version the other day. They did a great job, and
didn't emphasize the "bad" parts that the late '80's - early '90's remix used.
