Default FCP newbie question

When capturing DV via firewire, is it necessary to purchase a decent capture
card? or can I just go ahead and capture via the standard firewire port on
my mac?

The FW port on your Mac is just a place to dump digital bits. To
actually record, not dump, DV you'll need something to convert the
video to bits. If you've already recorded something and the device you
used has a FW port then just plug it in.

e.g. I have a firewire Canopus advc-100 interface that converts our
shvs home video tapes into my Mac to edit and then burn dvd's. I can
also plug a video camera directly into the Canopus and record on the
Mac.

DV, by definition, is already bits. Any DV camera is going to have a FW
port, and the Mac FW is perfectly fine for capturing.

Reading is fundamental. The post said CAPTURING DV. Not dumping it.
(Semantics perhaps??)

Also, there are older DV camcorders with no FW at all.

Yeah, but he is new to the tech and meant downloading or dumping.

Also, there are older DV camcorders with no FW at all.

Really, point us to link.

Sony DSR200 (upscale semi-pro/low-end pro). The newer 200a added
Firewire.
