Default What does this spec mean?

I'm gain staging an equipment chain and one of the pieces has a nominal
input level listed as "1.55V eff". What does "eff" mean? I've never
run across a spec listed like that before. It's a European (Dutch, to
be precise) piece.

Thanks for any help,

It's what you say when you put a 1.5V alkaline battery into extremely
delicate equipment designed for 1.2 V nicads, and it blows up.

Effectief, although RMS is used quite often too.

What's called _RMS_ in English is called _efficace_ in French
(meaning _effective_). There must be a related Dutch word. I'd
take this to mean that the input is calibrated for 0 dB = 4.38
Vpp.

In Italy we call it "efficace" too, and means RMS. It's not a kind of
semi-pro terminology at all.. maybe it suonds a little bit "old
style".. but it's still widely used in every university.

Is it something that's supposed to be "pro?" In that case, it might
be Dutch for RMS or maximum. If it's a piece of consumer-hyped gear,
it could mean anything.

Very much so..it's an acoustic enhancement system made by Acoustic
Control Systems in the Netherlands. We use it to control the acoustic
environment in our hall.

It's not conventional, not in English anyway. I'd be curious if it has
a "real" meaning.

I've been told over in aapls that it means "RMS". I was gussing peak to
peak, so I'm glad to be corrected.

Gracias. I figured it was something like that. But over here in the
'50's and '60's we had all sorts of descriptives for amplifier power
that could make a 15 watt amplifier look like 400 watts. Fortunately
we're past that in most branches of the industry now - though I recall
not long ago seeing a "400 watt stereo" set of PC speakers powered by
a wall wart with 6V, 500 mA output.

Thanks to all of you for your help and time.

Hi Denni

Found this

" The maintenance technicians have to take care, that all equipment
is aligned to this level. In Germany the standard studio level is +6dBu =
1.55V.
Other countries have other levels between +4dBu and +12dBu."

Here http://www9.dw-world.de/rtc/infotheq...ualpar_02.html

although we operate at -10dBu and +4 dBu here in Denmark

That's very interesting since this is designed by a Dutch guy and built
by a Dutch company. Maybe they felt +6dBu would give them more
headroom?
