yeah, A laptop is my digital music server.
i rip using EAC compressed in Flac format.
the whole library is stored on a 500Gb external drive
but I can shuffe about a third of my total files in and out of my pc
hard drive.
It is filled les than 1/3, to 134 Gb of music.

i am temporarily using a cheap DAC (Konnect8) connected by firewire.
I have a new DAC on order, a Brigatta tube DAC form
PAcific Valve and Electric.
Its a modified Lite Audio 60 DAC.
One mod is that it is a USB DAC, but, it also accepts optical

I plan to go direct from my pc to the DAC by USB, despite USB
shortcomings.
But, at some time, I will also try going firewire from my pc into
some typer of adapter/interface that has optical out (such as by
Hagerman).

THe PC is a last years model TOSHIBA Pentium Dual Core SAtellite 183
mHz.
It was only $476 ON uBid as a factory repack.

It is dedicated to nothing else but playingmusic , so there is not
relatively much background activity going on.
I do my ripping on my other laptop, swapping an external drive between
the two

Pro A-10 monitors.

Sure. I run the output of the PC into an aux input of my stereo so that
I can listen to internet radio anywhere in the house, mosty www.pandora.com

It's mid-fi at best (128 bps MP3), but it allows me to discover new
artists or just put on background music that plays endlessly without me
having to get up to change the CD or LP.

Since most PC's are noisy I won't have one in the listening room(s) -
what's the point of 90db S/N when you're listening at 85 dbSPL and the
computer fan is whirring away at 50 dbSPL?

This is a problem that I have solved with this gadget :

It works correctly and it's not really expensive.

It is a simple matter to replace the fans with quiet units. The PC in my HT
setup is inaudible at distances greater than about 4'.

In my BR, I went one step further: the system's case and cpu fans run below
900rpm and it doesn't have a hard drive. It boots off the network. It is
inaudible beyond 2'.

My refrigerator is noisier than that. When I listen to music,
I just turn it off and let my food rot.

Of course Arnii Krooger has been there done, that. Here's the proof,

Default Audio for Holy Rollers

StynchBlob is still trying to save the godless heathens.

If so, please elaborate.

Yes, praize JEE-zus!

Box: Holy Virginal Conception
Maryboard: St. Peter Assumption DO OUT WITH THE SINNERS!
CPU: Apostles Party Hard 666DV-RX09

[snip]

Instead of that foolishness, Styncho, tell us about your cult. How many
fags have you strung up this month? How many babies have you rescued
from the abortionists? Let's talk about the important stuff, like what
you're planning to do with your worldly goods when Gawd calls you up to
Heaven. Have you replaced any godless politicians with men of the cloth?
And update us on your schemes to destroy the Episcopal/Apoostate church
because of their crimes against Gawd's plan.

After we've covered the important stuff, then maybe we'll have time to
learn about your computer fetish.
