Is one of the things considered that if it wasn't either a very
expensive or very inexpensive mic, it wouldn't be "interesting?" The
RNMP has never really been recognized as a good preamp for ribbon mics,
mostly it makes SM57s sound better than they should. At the time that
preamp was designed, most "cheap" condenser mics were still in the $500
range, so that wasn't really its target application.
I'm not guessing. I don't even claim to be able to recognize an SM57
into a Mackie mixer with any reliability.
I would go further. If this is a ribbon, and I strongly suspect it is,
then the preamp is definitely not an RNP. The noise would certainly be
audible.
