View Full Version : What is this low freq blip? Zoom H4

Hey y'all,

I recently got a Zoom H4, and have been carting it around recording
stuff to see what the little recorder is all about. I've noticed, now,
a recurring problem: I keep seeing this "blip" that appears about once
every 1 second, which appears to be about .1 or .12 seconds long -
lets ballpark it at 6Hz.

Here are two screenshots of a test sample recorded in my noisey
appartment:

Now, of course, I can't actually hear it, and as well I can strip uber-
low frequencies out. But, I'm both curious as to what it might be, and
worried that perhaps its a sign of some issue that I should be
concerned about. Any ideas or insight appreciated. Please use the
audio version of small words in any replies you may kindly leave - I
am a novice.

Thanks!

Let me get those on their own line for ease of clickiness, for those
using something that generates links:

Your heartbeat from the extreme awesomeness of the Zoom H4.

Actually, if you are holding it in your hand it might be picking up
your heartbeat. Have you tried this using the device sitting on a
layer of foam-type stuff for isolation?

You should contact Zoom. Maybe they have a fix. Perhaps it is
garbage-collection on the embedded operating system or whatever, but
Zoom should be able to fix it (unless it actually is your heartbeat).

Hah! I suspected I might get a hearbeat response ;) I did a number of
tests where I did not hold the recorder (the sample in the screenshots
above are from me in another room while the recorder does its
recording)
I've noticed the problem in indoor areas, in my appartment, handheld,
no handheld, in the middle of a park, etc etc. The issue is pretty
clearly hardware related.

It looks ok, but I'll bet you can't record quiet sounds,
like abient backyard noise without the mic pre's hissing
all over your work.
