View Full Version : "Triangle" sample for evaluation

I have recorded a metal cutlery hanger at 1" from a microphone in an
enclosed space. You can download it here
http://download.yousendit.com/170C012923488321
Now compare to Mr Any Kruegers sample :
http://www.pcabx.com/technical/reference/triangle-2ds.wav
I am in no way suggesting the cutlery hanger is a musical instrument.
However how do you find Mr Kerugers sample in comparison, clarity,
decya, acoustics etc?

I get a nice 9 1/2 second ring.

Indeed, the intial clang of the cutlery is very harsh in comparison to that
produced by the triangle.

The cutlery recording has about 30 dB less dynamic range than the triangle
recording. There is almost 20 dB more midrange noise in the cutlery
recording, suggesting that a poorer quality mic and/or mic preamp was used.
There is clear evidence of contamination by a NTSC TV set.
I would expect that vinyl uber alles advocates would not be aware of any of
these failings, since many of them seem to have a built-in "noise gate" in
their hearing, that cuts off small details and low levels.

No, they don't.

Facts say otherwise. Live with it. I notice that Jenn has failed the noise
gate test two ways. First, she claimed that the Triangle sample cut out when
it didn't, and then she didn't notice the cut out that was present in the
cutlery hanger sample.
She said and I quote:
"I get a nice 9 1/2 second ring."

I offered to send you the screen shot. Do you want to see it or not?

You don't hear it for 9 1/2 seconds?

I can make one of my own any day I want to. Just take the good file, delete
some of it, and do the screen dump.

Yeah, but it cuts off before things get really interesting. This file has
only LP-type dynamic range, no doubt due to cheap equipment and/or careless
production.
You missed my comments about the fact that this file really does cut off
around -60 dB, or did you Jenn?

Since you obviously don't trust me for some reason, how shall I prove to
you that the file as I received it is how I say it is?

All I said was that I hear a nice 9 1/2 second ring, as opposed to your
file. IOW, I stated the facts exactly as they are.

Actually, "things as they are" involve my file being far longer than you've
ever heard it play, right?

Yep. So how is that "claiming that the Triangle sample cut out when it
didn't" and how is the cutlery sample not "ringing for 9 1/2 seconds"?
I can only hear what is there, yes?

> Yep.
First off Jenn, you just indicted yourself for judging my file and
publishing your judgements of my file, fully knowing that you have never
heard my file in its entirety.
Secondly, there's not a lot nice about the cutlery file, and I'm surprized
that you never noticed its obvious faults.
For example the cutlery file's inital strike is very harsh-sounding compared
to the triangle file.
It also has a rather pathological decay. The decay is not monotonic, but
rather it increases and decreases quite audibly at least 6 times before it
cuts off. The pathological decay comes from some resonances that are very
unevenly spaced, unlike a fine orchestral triangle.
Then, there's the slight matter of what the cutlery file decays into - some
rather raucuous-sounding noise at a relatively high level.
Of course having a vinyl-lover's noise gate built into your hearing Jenn,
you probably never noticed any of this.
>So how is that "claiming that the Triangle sample cut out when it didn't"
You did that before the cutlery file was posted.
>and how is the cutlery sample not "ringing for 9 1/2 seconds"?
You said the cutlery file had "a nice 9 1/2 second ring", when it obviously
doesn't. It is nasty and pathological compared to a regular musical
instrument triangle.
> I can only hear what is there, yes?
Well Jenn, you've already claimed that you knew what my triangle file sounds
like, while you also admitted that you've never listened to most of it. No
matter, you also got relevant facts wrong about the part you heard.

Incorrect, yet again. Check the record. I commented before I knew that
the file is longer than what I heard. If you disagree, quote the record.

Incorrect, yet again. I wasn't commenting on the quality of the "music"
made by the cutlery, only that it rang for the time indicated. We were
discussing the length of the 2 files, remember?

But BEFORE I knew that the file was actually longer, as clearly
indicated by the record.

Again, all I was discussing was the length of the file. Context, Arny.

Your last comment on my file was posted at 9:29pm last night, in a
discussion of your comparison of it to the cutlery file:
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.audio.opinion/msg/b48575d0bbb6d584
You have known that my file was at least 4 seconds long since you quoted
that fact in a reply to a post from "Mr. Fox" that you posted at 9:24 pm
last night:
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.audio.opinion/msg/6f13bd147769869d
End of story.

In this file a comparison of the two files was invited and Jenn responded to
the invitation.

In this post Jenn quoted a post that confirmed my file was 4 seconds long.
Jenn had previously said that she heard only a shorter segment of it. To the
best of my knowlege, Jenn has never reported hearing the whole 4 seconds of
my file.

I responded to it without comment on the length or quality of your file.
Any normal person can see that, Arny.

Correct. And my comments about the quality and length of your file came
BEFORE that, Arny.

Normal people can read and see that I commented about the length and
quality of your files BEFORE I could have known that the file was longer
than I was hearing on my computer. You can't. Draw your own
conclusions.

So what are you saying Jenn, that 9:29 when you commented quality, is before
9:24 when you quoted the correct length?
Interesting. ;-)

Idiot. The point was not dynamic range; didnt even try to get that
right )I see now peramp gain right up fade down(. The point is your
'Trian'ge' rec. is 5h1t . It lacks sparkle vibrancy clarity musicality
or any other attribute. Renmarkable, this is the simplest instrument
of them all. How could you get is so wrong? Your instrument is
obviously made of lead, struck with flesh and rekorded off akis
(possibly of behind mic)

Arny, you really are pathetic. You are twisting all this in an attempt to
savage Jenn, when anybody who followed the thread knows she is telling the
truth. You really make a mockery of your Christianity. Better you should
spend time getting a psychologist to work with you on your need for
self-agrandizement.

Did you know that many psychologists won't work with people with
personality disorder, especially if they're intelligent? Most lack
self-awareness, and will use their intelligence to justify the
oddities of their disorder until the psychologist begins to wonder if
it's HE who's wrong. If Arnie is prepared to spend years here on
Usenet defending indefensible positions, pretending he's not as
disliked as he clearly is, and generally slashing and burning all
order and logic, what do you suppose a psychologist is likely to
achieve?

What self-aggrandizement? Do you think that I didn't know that very many
so-called subjectivists on this group would twist the truth anyway including
loose to thy to help Jenn wriggle out of the situation she created for
herself by being poorly informed and arrogant? The consequences of her
self-impalement won't be pretty.
There's going to be hell to pay for Jenn's flame-out, I will be the payee.
It's the high price of telling the truth to people who like you love Harry,
who love their lives of self-serving illusions.

Arnii, I know about your legendary cheapness and all, but at this point in
your "life", you can surely afford to spring for one session with a

Both sound like real "instruments" to me. However, by miking so closely
low frequency components are picked up that would normally not be heard
or recorded in an orchestral setting. Arny's triangle recording is not
al all how a triangle sounds a few feet or more away. It's similar to
the bass cancelation of dipolar speakers at normal distance due to the
front and back waves meeting. However if you put a microphone right
next to the speaker diaphragm of such a speaker the mike will pick up
the bass full strength. Sorry I'm not more eloquent in my description.

How does one "represent" intelligence? Either it's there or it's not,
and if it's not the evidence will soon mount. I don't believe you're
unintelligent--not for a moment. I greatly envy your technical
knowledge and skills. But you have a personality problem involving
self-esteem and self-awareness, which are often intertwined, and it
would be wise if, in the midst of your rabid denials, you considered
the possibility that all those people who keep saying "Get help,

I assume you mean the proximity effect that occurs with pressure gradient (

Hi TB,
Respectfully, there's no way in hell that those are real acoustic
instruments. It is a synth. The triangle is real; a terrible
instrument, but real.

Paul there is simply nothing about you that I envy or even find more than

No, but it is a massive long wordy sentence, which exposes quite a bit about

Please correct me if I'm wrong Jenn, but your hypothesis is that real
trumpet players can never ever play that closely to perfect pitch and hold a
note that steadily, that long.

Note that in the above post I was refering only to the triangle and the

No, I mean if you (lightly!) strike a triangle or bell or iron skillet
etc. an inch from your ear the low frequency components will be more
prominent than if you strike it at arms length. There are tones in that
triangle file that simply would not be heard at all from 10 feet away.

Not applicable. The online doc for the pre-downsampling version of
recording is posted at:
http://www.pcabx.com/technical/sample_rates/index.htm
"24 bit 96 KHz "reference" samples were made by using 2 B&K 4007 1/2"
condenser microphones powered by an Audio Technica phantom power unit,
preamplified using a Benchmark Media mic preamp, and recorded using a CardD
Deluxe in a 800 Mhz Pentium 3 computer located in another room. They were
closely miced on-axis in a fairly small dead space. Therefore the transients
are very well-defined and harmonic-rich, technically speaking. They also
have relatively low amounts of background noise (mostly acoustic). They may
sound quite "dry" to your ears."
B&K 4007 are small omnidirectional measurement mics. About $2500 a pair.
Further information about this recording is near and in figures 11 & 12.

You're close to part of it. Acoustic trumpets or (French Horns in the
"French Horns" file) played by humans cannot play that well in tune.
The "Trumpets" file contains notes not playable by trumpets. There is
no shift in timbre when the range shifts, particularly at the overtone
breaks of the instruments. These are SOME of the clues.

The equipment used in the orgional test is pretty much fully dispersed.
Note from http://www.pcabx.comtechnical/sample_rates/index.htm that the
original test was done around 3/2001.

So your ear is fully dispersed? Can't find an iron skillet?

Borgicide has never been a scenario embraced by the Resistance. Rather, we
try to raise the Beast's self-awareness just enough for it to realize how
truly horrible its existence is. If we can achieve that goal, only a small
shove will be needed to induce the Krooborg to escape its artificially
enhanced, but still mortal, existence.
