View Full Version : Maybe I'll Start Hangin' Here
The Big Cheese
November 18th 03, 04:48 AM
Maybe I need to start hangin' here and extolling the virtues and
attributes of Bose.
Seems like I've been successful in running off most of the trolls,
misfits, and psychos out of alt.home.theater-misc, so I'll give it a
shot here. You really need my services here.
Seems like most of the misfits that post here talk about non-audio or
non-A/V products. You dick heads need to go somewhere else. I mean, do
you think Shrub even listens to an audiophool system?
Amar has installed multiple sets of 901' and Lifestyle 50 systems
throughout Shrub's and the VP's quarters as well as on the Air Force One
planes. So if it's good enough for our President it should sure as hell
be good enough for you!

A good place to start would be to tell us the measured performance of
Bose products: What are the frequency response curves? What digital
"tricks" does Bose do to get accurate sound from small boxs? What is
the maximum undistorted sound power level? What is the mean time
between failure. Etc.
I realise you choose the opinion forum, but you are allowed to present
facts here.

Cheese,
I've been praying for someone to replace Howard Ferstler.
Thank you for reaffirming my faith in the almighty.
My first request is -- I hope this doesn't sound too contradictory --
could you please try to antagonize both the tweakos, and sliderule jockeys,
while maintaining an allegedly self-consistent position? Keeps the number of
sockpuppets to the minimum.
It's nice to have a blimp to hover over us all.

FACTS:
1. Bose is the number one speaker brand in the world.
2. Bose sell more speakers than all the other speaker companies combined.
3. If Bose were bad, people would quit buying them. This has not happened.
4. Bose has more repeat customers than any other brand or company.
5. Therefore Bose is the best speaker.

Robert, you sound like my kind of person.
I really like ****ing off all the tweakos and misfits who take pleasure
in spending $25,000 on a set of speaker cables and yet cannot hear the
difference in a DBT test.
The agony of defeat probably drove Steve Zipster to an early grave, for
example. Poor little Yamaha integrated kicked big ol' Pass's ass!
The boy probably would have never been able to pick out Bose 901's from
Apogees in a truly blind ABT.
It's nice to be wanted.

Monsieur Looneyel,
From your email address, it appears you are just a french toadie.
Chirac is an even bigger asshole and if he were educated, he would be
able to speak the King's English, but he cannot as he is nothing more
than an ignorant french country bumpkin.
G.W. Bush is multilingual unlike your miserable excrement of a president.
Now, can you say "adios" to the group and just like go away unless you
have something relevant regarding audio to post?
Anyway, in this country we like to eat frogs, but I suspect you're all
asshole and no legs.

I'd like to see proof of that. They're not the biggest consumer electronics
company, and they have lots of very large competitors. When one says "all
other speaker companies combined", they are saying quite a lot.

I find it interesting that nowhere did you discuss sound quality, technical
performance, or value for money spent.
On balance, I've never said that Bose were the dregs of the earth and the
worst speaker known to man. It is also quite clear to me that some of their
products don't sound very good, especially given the price. Bose is
well-known for doing things that appeal to the mass market, that also
sharply compromise sound quality.

Bad logic. 1+2+3+4 (not equal sign) 5 in this case. Quantity and
low price are not equivalent to quality.

Mr Cheese, I bet you couldn't tell allot of difference in a level matched
DBT between a £4000 Bose system and a cheap £400 Sony rig.
So is the Bose system worth £3600 more?, if you think it is explain how it's
worth the extra amount. just like spending money on an overpriced and hyped
up speaker cable or interconnect with a fancy name stuck on it. If the
majority of the public fritter their money away on marketing hype and
designer names as your statistics prove then IMO this has become a very sad
world indeed.
Lets hope the future generations are blessed with more common sense.

Cheese,
A little sublety would go a long way here. The hardest thing to argue
against is something that is almost true. For example, if you were to say,
"Bose makes the best speakers in the under-$300 class", or "The Bose 901"
remains as remarkable today as when it was introduce 90 years ago", a rapid
rise in blood pressure would be perceptible among many of the denizens here.
Personally, I've always found it remarkable that Radio Shack purchased
manufacturing rights to one of the most remarkable tweeters in the world,
the Linaeum, and managed to bury it, partly by adhering to Bose construction
techniques in any version larger than 5 inches.

I've got a bridge to sell you if you believe that. bose advertises more

Actually, Bose is made to do exactly what it's supposed to do.
I went into their store the other day at the mall and realized that he
was a brilliant, if misguided engineer. They are artificially NOT
accurate and boost the upper-ranges to compensate for really noisy
environments like malls and vehicles. They sould acceptable in those
environments due to the 50-70dbdb or more crud that drowns out the
upper midrange.
They are made to demo well in their Bose stores and simmilar outlets.
Nothing else.
Get them home, though, and they sound like crap - distorted in
a quiet environment as they are anything but accurate or flat-response.

Deep Goat Boy,
In case you haven't figured it out, all the frogs are ****s according to

So lets get back to audio and forget the politics - There's other groups

I guess you flunked macroeconomics or were asleep during the classes.
Quality = the products that bring in the most money. Quality is a
measure of dollar volume for any given product category. When quality
drops, people quit buying. A perfect example of this is Detroit, where
their poor quality cars of the 1970's and 1980's created the market for
high quality Japanese cars, whose dollars sales NOW EXCEED Detroit's,
proving my point.
McDonalds brings in the most money of any hamburger chain.
Do I have to graph it out for you?

Smegma, you are an idiot
You've answered your own question. The Bose will of course sound like a
4,000 british pound sterling system while the sony will sound like a
cheap piece of ****.
You obviously don't read your own magazines published in the UK that
have been giving RAVE reviews to all Bose products.
But I can remember anything nice being said about the 400 british pound
sony piece of ****.

The Bose equalizer and tone controls will make them sound just as good
at home as they sound at their stores. No recordings are every recorded
truly "flat" - That's why responsible manufacturers put tone controls on
their products, and you see automatic room equalization added to the
higher end Bose LifeStyle systems.
This technology will gradually work it way down to less expensive Bose
systems so everyone can enjoy accurate sound.
And answer honestly, did you actually take home a LifeStyle system with
the automatic room calibration? I thought not.
See, because of your audiophool credentials you've assigned yourself,
you're just another Bose-Basher.
Why don't you just stay in RAHE where your posts make a little more sense?

I had a couple of these tweeters and liked their sound.
When I finally got around to measuring them, I found that the low end
only went down to about 2500 Hz. Opening the tweeter up, I saw only a
simple, one capacitor (6 dB/octave), crossover. I installed a 2nd
order crossover ( C-L ) with values that peaked up the low end. I
picked L-C values such that it was acoustically flat down to 1500 Hz.
That was almost a one octave improvement in bandwidth. It sounds very
nice with the wider range.
Every once in a while Radio Shack will have a good driver for sale.
But, they soon correct their error.

In your opinion. The fact is for the money, bose sucks big time.
Look inside a bose speaker and you will see how cheaply made the
components are. Look in side a comparably priced quality speaker
and you will see superior components and build quality. Not to
mention better sound. That you are such a big bose fan shows that
you are gullible and fall for all the bose advertising.
I will also agree that as much as you are wrong, at least it is audio
related.

Their spending shows what this is. Bose spends more on advertising than
on research. So it is obvious that whay they are supposed to do is sell
for a lot of money. Nothing to do with sounding good.

Not to mention their one note bass. No matter how much you boost the signal,
a 6" woofer is not going to produce strong deep bass.

Most folks don't want to take back the expensive toy they bought, so they
just think their hearing at home is worse than at the store.

No amount of equalzer manipulation is going to help bose reproduce highs
or lows properly.

All recordings are 'flat' as you put it. They are what is supposed to be
reproduced. It is up to the speaker to come as close to the recording
as possible. Bose can't come close because their speakers cannot produce
lows or highs.
>This technology will gradually work it way down to less expensive Bose

Auto room eq is actually a good idea. But since you are dealing with
bose speakers, they will still sound crappy. It's like picking up
furniture from the garbage and then having an interior designer come
in to arrange it for you. Your room is still going to look like a
room full of garbage.
>And answer honestly, did you actually take home a LifeStyle system with

Nope, but i have heard, and seen, enough to know my money is better spent
else where.

No, my ears, and eyes, tell me Bose is not a good place to spend my money.
If bose cost 1/3 to 1/2 the price they fix, they would probably be an ok buy
for the money.

Want Bose clones? Cambridge Soundworks. I've pulled both apart in the
past and even examined them - they are made in the same factories in China.
CSW's products are okay, though, as they ARE cheap sounding, but inexpensive.
For $80, their PC Works 2.1 system is a fine setup.

You mean south of the boarder, where Bose speakers are made?
I thought the whole Bose speaker thing on RAO was dead.... this discussion
is like deja vu of 1997 when I first discovered newsgroups. How long is it
going to be before we get to see the frequency response someone took of his
901's with a Radio Shack SPL meter? - haven't seen that in ages.
Since this is after all an opinion newsgroup, I'll add my $0.02.
Bose experience 1: Personally, I think the AM-5 is not bad - sure you can get
better sound for the money, but they can actually be place properly in a room
where it would be impossible/impractical to place normal speakers properly.
A good example of this, is when the couch faces a wall which has large floor
to ceiling windows, and anything placed in front of them would obstruct a
view. I installed an AM-5 system in such a room, and the results were very
good. I was able to place the satellites such that they provided good stereo
imaging to all of the seats in the room. With conventional speakers, it would
have been almost impossible to get such good placement. The AM-5 speakers may
not be as good as other models at the same price, but in this application it
would have been nearly impossible to use anything else and get good imaging.
The satellites are also physically good looking, and unobtrusive. They don't
have tacky silver trim, or anything else which may draw attention to them in a
negative way.
I will note that the room is very live, with a vaulted ceiling, and hardwood
floors. I put the "bass module" almost in a corner, but not quite. The results
vary quite considerably depending on where the bass module is located, and it
took a while to find the best setup. Once I found it, however, the system
sounds excellent, if not perfectly accurate, with a wide variety of source
material. One curious note, is that when the vertical blinds are closed, the
system loses a bit of treble, and the treble control must be turned up about
half a notch to compensate.
In summary, I have never seen a speaker system which provided the same level
of sound quality for such a minimal space invasion. The AM-5, although not an
audiophile speaker system by any stretch of the imagination, is very
listenable, and I would not hesitate to install it in a room where floor
standing or stand mounted speakers would be impractical. I would take a
properly set up AM-5 any day over conventional speakers which have been
crammed into a room wherever space is available. Placement is everything. I
will also note, that a 50 Watt per channel amplifier is able to drive them to
ear splitting levels - people who criticize these speakers for low efficiency
do not know what they are talking about, the same amplifier will not even wake
up my Magnepans.
Okay time for Bose experience number two. I was so impressed by the AM-5
setup, that I decided to listen to some new series 601s, as I needed some new
speakers for my own stereo. This was a big mistake, the 601s sounded terrible
compared to every other speaker in the store - horrible tweeter, which was
poorly integrated with the boomy woofer. I really don't understand where the
601s are supposed to compete, because at the price level, there are dozens of
similarly sized speakers which are far better in every way possible.
