View Full Version : New DM24 - Any Tips?

I just got a Tascam DM24 for live use. That has to be the worst manual I've
ever seen. Seems like I've read that Tascam are known for their crappy
manuals. Anyway, I'm getting it set up and have a question. I have
assigned all mic/line inputs to their corresponding channels but some
channels will not come through. Not that it matters, but just for
reference, channels 1-4 and 7 & 8 are not functioning like the rest. I get
nothing on the meters, nothing going to the mains, and nothing to the aux
sends. Everything seems to be routed fine so I thought something was
damaged in the preamps. Patching from the channel inserts into a known
working channel's line in works just fine. What am I missing?

Any other hangups that you have had or tips that you can give me about this
mixer would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to have it up and running by
Sunday morning. Thanks a lot.

Make sure in the I/O screen, that channel input really is from mic/line,
not from return. Is it like that when you load a library preset ('new
mixing' etc.) Can you route the inputs 1-4/7&8 to working channels
succesfully?

There is a lot of helpful people at Tascam discussion board
http://www.vaporpark.com/invboard/
too.

Yes, the input really is from mic/line in the I/O screen. No, I cannot
route the inputs to working channels. I can route other inputs to the
non-working channels; that's what lead me to believe that it was the
preamps.

Thanks. I'll check that out.

sorry Tom I am really not familiar with this unit
if it has inserts (most digitals don't) you can bypass the pres and
inject signal at that point

I think it might be one of the worst mixers for live use, but TASCAM
did have that application in mind when they built it (or maybe after
they built it and tried to figure out how to sell more of them). I
know that they had a new manual (written by former Recording editor
Nick Batzdorf - they asked him before they asked me) which addressed
three primary applications - studio recording, post production, and
live sound. I haven't seen the manual so I don't know how good it is,
but Nick's a good writer and a real user, so either you don't have the
manual he wrote or he really missed the boat (or you have).

There are so many ways to not get sound out of a console, and they're
harder to find on a digital console when you can't see everything at
once. Just go through it methodically and either you'll find the
problem or conclude that it's indeed broken.

Did you buy it second-hand?

I have heard great things about it for live use. I use and really like a
Spirit 328, but after having problems with it rebooting decided to stay away
from another one.

I'll have to look into that.

I know. It is so much more simple on my 328; it's more straight-forward and
intuitive.

> Did you buy it second-hand?

Yes, I did. It was used for one session then sold to me. I e-mailed the
owner and he never even got familiar enough with it to give me much help.

Defective insert jacks on these channels? What if you connect an
outboard compressor to the insert of non-working input?
