View Full Version : Marantz PMD670 Buggy USB

I have had consistent errors when using the PMD670, two different SanDisk
512MB CF cards and several different computers. Below is the text of a
support e-mail to the vendor. The problem was resolved by using an outboard
CF card readers but it can be disconcerting to see file error messages on
the only copy you have of a recording. To date there has been no response
from Marantz beyond asking if the error happens with the bundled 64MB CF
card (which it doesn't).
"I have consistently been getting file errors on a PMD670, using SanDisk
512MB media. When I try to transfer the file via USB 1.1 connection to a Win
XP machine, I get these error messages:
From a DOS windows, "The request could not be performed because of an I/O
device error"
From Windows Explorer: "Error Copying File or Folder" and then "cannot copy
1001: the parameter is incorrect"
From the Intervideo WinDVD4 software: "the file #1 has invalid format"
I know that the file is actually good because if I hook it up to my portable
drive device (Xs Drive II 20GB file store), I can copy the file and play or
edit it. The portable drive does not seem to see the file as being corrupt,
yet two different Windows XP computers cannot copy the file from the digital
recorder. [Note: the Dazzle CF reader also accesses the file with no
problem.]
In a previous support call, the tech suggested that the CF card was bad.
This is happening with both of my 512MB CF cards, even if I reformat them
between use.
Any help would be appreciated."

I've been using two different 1GB Sandisk CF cards with a PMD670 with
no problem; however, I haven't used the USB 1.1 interface. I only
transfer via a PCCard CF card reader. I think the CF reader is faster
than USB 1.1 in any event. IIRC there's also a note somewhere in the
Marantz docs that only standard CF cards not CF+ or Ultra cards should
be used with the PMD670.

Thanks, Chris. I don't think these are plus or ultra cards. The Marantz tech
didn't ask about that at all. Also I could not find the approved list of
cards on their web site, just a chart of recording capacities for different
size cards.

our radio station has 7 PMD670 in use w/ the 1G Sandisk cards. the
only problem downloading is with a USB 1.1 port. it just won't do it.
switch to a USB 2.0 machine and away it goes. preferred method is w/
CF reader.
BTW, notice how your batteries run down after charging and when it
isn't plugged in? Marantz has a firmware fix for that but you must
send the machine in. search RAP for PMD670 and you'll find my earlier
posts on this.

Thanks, Dan. I have been removing the battery pack when the unit isn't in
use. Maybe when I send it in they can fix the USB too. Marantz told us it
only did USB 1.1.

Everybody wants an approved list of aftermarket media stuff, but the
manufacturers just won't do it any more (or ever, for some). What's
available and unavailable changes so fast these days they could never
keep up. No sooner would they test a card and "approve" it but it
would be replaced by a new, improved version.

just as an aside, Marantz tech support states that the PMD670 uses a
second generation engine and it is NOT picky as to which cards it
uses. previous models of CF recorders WERE picky and Marantz
published a list of tested vendors.

And the PMD670 manual says to check the web site for a list of cards that
have been tested. Their tech support said the web site was still "under
development."
I would be happy with a utility program that would confirm compatibility of
newer CF cards as they come out. But I still believe that their USB
implementation is buggy.
