In a world where most of us would much more
care to pay our respects to dead musicians (like Jerry Reed)
let us not forget the voice of Don Lafontaine

Indeed, on both counts.

Jerry was a huge guitar talent; one of the best ever for his style.
Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed...

There are few Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins videos on YouTube:

I assume that's the "claw"!

Yep, a classic.

Yes, that odd missing first finger thing. But MAN could he play!

Richard Thompson's first finger helps hold a pick, but I'd guess he's
not the first to do so.

I have a lot of respect for Don LaFontaine. I posted link to this short
from his website. Here it is again on YouTube:

Yes, there is a playing technique that is a hybrid of flatpick and
fingerstyle. Glen Campbell also uses that technique. Jerry was the
only player known to me who used a thumbpick and fingers 2-4 ("the
claw"), leaving the first finger out completely. Also, the hybrid
pickers that I know (like Thompson and Campbell) aren't really solo
players like Jerry was.

Funny! LaFontaine may well be the most heard speaking voice of all time
(probably not including political figures). Kind of the Carol Kaye or
Stevie Gadd of voices ;-)

SteveGadd, is he more prevalent than Jim Keltner or Russ Kunkel?
Just saw my tivo recording of Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett last night
Lovett's band had Russ Kunkel, raitt's had her usual Ricky Fataar.

Yeah, I think so. The last time that I looked at such things in the job
books at the L.A. union office, I was astounded at Gadd's credits. In
his case, it's not only the astounding recording credits:

and live concerts that I think make him the most heard, but also
big-time TV, movies, and commercials.

He's no Hal Blaine. :-)

I like the nod to Tony Williams; I've been listening to Nefertiti lately.

King Crimson fans will be shocked by the Tony Levin at Eastman photo,
purists offended by the Michel Petrucciani Shreds YouTube found
elsewhere.

Hal Blaine might well be King!
