Does anybody have any idea how I can connect a turntable to my
computer and get some music onto the computer from vinyl records?
Thanks for any ideas or help.

**If your turntable doesn't have a phono preamp built in (some modern ones
do, some don't), then connect the TT to an amplifier, which has a phono
preamp (some do, some don't). Then connect the tape out to your computer
sound card and you're away.

To add to that - if you are using a notebook for capture, you probably
will need to get another sound card (there are several affordable USB
devices that work well). Very few notebook sound cards have a line-in:
most only have a microphone jack which is mono only.
Generally this is not a problem with desktop computer sound cards.

Yes they do - my wife has a Mac Book that is a very nice machine. I do
like Macs quite a bit (I'm typing this on an old iMac that we've had for
years) but most of my professional life requires the use of Windows.
I haven't used the Mac for any audio capture, but I have used a Toshiba
notebook to record some vinyl. For that, I have to use a USB audio
device because the sound card only accepts a mono input.
But it works well, and I've got some pretty simple software on the
Toshiba that I like for doing the capture/CD burning and possible
cleanup of the captured files, though I often find I don't clean them
much.

My daughter has a Mac Notebook. It cost her about 3 times what a similar
Windows laptop would have cost her. She paid $100s more for a MacIntosh
extended warranty. When she had a problem with it, she had to send the whole
notebook out of town to be checked out. The repair facility said - hey
there's a tiny dent in corner of the case, the machine is therefore abused
and we won't honor the warranty.
I don't think she's buying another Mac real soon!

Not only does the laptop input only accept mono, it also has too much gain
because it is a microphone input.
The good news is that USB audio devices that equal or better any laptops
line input are readily available and relatively inexpensive. One to avoid
is called the iMic. One to look for is the Behringer UCA 202.

"Mocking" does not compute. Please rephrase using known vocabulary

following vocab units as replacements:
measuring
quantifying

fuliminating

Very sorry to hear that - our experience over the years has been quite a
bit more positive with Apple products. Certainly they've been easily as
reliable as any of the other PC products I've owned, and usually have
been better built.
Though in all honesty I haven't had any warranty work done in a very
long time. Oh, wait, that's not entirely true. There was some issue with
my wife's Macbook that was a warranty item, but I think it was more of a
recall to replace something.
It was handled locally, quickly and quite professionally.

I don't blame her at all if that was her experience.

What a coincidence: that's the same device that I use for capture. It
works well, and is quite cheap. I didn't care very much for the capture
software it came with though (I think it's Nero), but there are lots of
choices there.

I don't know what hardware you've got - if you would be so kind as to
list what computer you were planning on using, whether or not you've got
a turntable and so on it would be much easier to give advice.

Sounds good - do you have a receiver with a phono input? If so, you
shouldn't need any additional hardware (other than appropriate cabling).
You should be able to play your records on the turntable and run a cable
from your tape out into the sound card on your Dell.
You may want to get some software that helps with the capture/cleanup of
the records. There are a number of options out there, some of them free.
One shareware product that is pretty easy to use is called Spin It
Again:

It's not the most spophisticated software available for this purpose,
but it's very easy and the simplicity appeals to me.
Good luck!

You are very helpful! Yes, I do have a receiver with a phono input.
that's what it's connected to now. So, I need to cable from the back
of the receiver to the computer. Into the microphone jack? But I
will have to have software to capture the songs, right? I'm such a
novice at this.

No - you should plug it into the line input on the sound card, not the
microphone jack.

I think you might be a good candidate for the software that I mentioned
above: http://www.acoustica.com/spinitagain/
The software has detailed instructions on hooking things up to your
computer and how to proceed with the recording. You can use the software
on a trial basis for 3 albums, after which you the software will cease
to work unless you buy it.
However, give it a try - I think you'll find that going through a couple
of albums will help you understand the process, after which you can
either buy the software or move on to something else.
The only thing that this software doesn't get quite right for me is the
song breaks on the albums. It's easy to go through after you've recorded
and set them correctly though, but it took me a couple of tries to
realize what was going on and to fix it.

Wrong. They are closer than that.
It looks like the JGH thing really has ticked off the monster ego that
animates the Middiot.

Arnii's id was amputated during his affeciation process. The Beast as we

I vacillate between thinking they are idiots and thinking that they are so
arrogant that they think what they do does anything but make them look
completely stupid.
Mostly I don't think about them at all - I just throw them a little meat so
that they can keep on humiliating themselves. It seems to be what they want

Stupidity, let me be blind
To all the ills of humankind;
Fill me with simple sentiment
To walk the way my father went;
School me to sweat with robot folk
Beneath the yoke.

The "attention" that the Krooborg craves is the verbal equivalent of a
bath in raw sewage. That's one reason Turdborg is so closely linked to
scat.

Vestige of Earthly Remains
Decline of the human empire
Mass existence has expired
Disintegration in a flash of light
Wreckage is what is left in sight
The scars of life are left behind
What has happened to mankind?
Now our world is left in rubble
We should have know we where in trouble
Vestiges and decay
The earth is left this way
Ashes the only trace
Now a lonely place
Shifting through remains
Nothing here to gain
Lifeless barren zone
And I'm here left alone
Human life is overthrown
Look at what I once called at home
This planet seen is left demolished
Entity is now abolish
Elimination we have achieved
From the power of mass greed
Ruins here and that is it
Earth is left a pile of ****

Ya think? When human beings get what they want, they become satisfied
and stop seeking the same exact thing over and over and over again. How
about you compare this well-known principle to your pal Krooger. You say
he "wants" the opposition and obloquy, but he usually gets it, and
there's no sign of Krooger being satisfied.

Somewhat true. I still find his way of dealing with the world to be
interesting. His huge and sometimes extremely mean overreaction to
situations is beyond anything I've ever seen and, on a personal level,
some things are not easy to forgive. But yes, I occasionally tweak his

on one hand, when i launch a pie, "the rest of Usenet" laughs at me,

Goodie, let's study this.
Arny's life consists of:
basement training sessions with the neighborhood boys
builiding and marketing the sum of four abx boxes
graduating with a general engineering degree from a mediocre third
tier public university
a career designing ashtrays for the Dodge Horizon
publicly flogging himself over the untimely and unfortunate death of
his son
maintaining the exceptionally graphic www.pcabx.com website
fixing pc's for his neighbors
having a second career, a senet career purveying 'The Debating Trade"
spending his vacations communing with bears
and, most important of all, falsely accusing approximately thirty
people of sending him kiddie porn emails.

Krooger is "sure" that you're 32 years old, that you only pretend to be
a musician, and that your chief purpose in playing on Usenet is to
torment and humiliate him. Plus you're woefully understocked in
"relevant facts".
It almost appears, Jenn, that you don't really want to join the cadre of
elite "debating trade" warriors. We've caught you admitting error more
than ten times, for God's sake. And now you're asking the Krooborg what
he's "sure" of? I think you'd better launder all your sockpuppets and
start fresh. You'll never achieve Stinky Floater status the way you're
going now.

Wayne, welcome to RAO!
It is something of an insane assylum around here. Generally speaking,
most topics disintigrate into the kind of thing you are now seeing. As
far as I know RAO has always been like this, though the nasty battles
used to more objectivist vs subjectivist.
That doesn't mean it's not a good place to get advice or to discuss some
interesting music or a piece of audio gear, but be aware that someone is
likely to start sniping and then it starts again.
I hope that won't put you off asking more questions if you have them.
There really are good people here, even if they seem to be overshadowed
by some of the extremists.
If this is not to your liking, you will find the newsgroup
rec.audio.high-end mostly free of this kind of thing. It's a moderated
group though, and it can take a couple of days for your post to appear,
then a day or two more for responses to come in.
btw, have you been able to try doing an recording? I'm just wondering
how that's been going.

Not really. We've had a few self-described "objectivists", but they
weren't really. They all ended up choosing their stuff using entirely
subjective means, playing trial-and-error like Normals have always done.
The big difference between RAO now and 10 years ago is we're down to one

Nahh, the slide downhill started with Allan/Ellen/Alan Derrida, and
continued with Singh. As more and more people abandoned RAO, the place
shrunk to the point where a mental midget like the Middiot could pretty much

"Real" would be ironic for a sockpuppet, as we all are. "Rile" would

Heh, it's actually neither.
It's a French name and is pronounced with two syllables: "ree-ell" would
be about right. I'm trying to come up with a homophone of this from the
English language and I'm coming up blank. Perhaps Arny is thinking of a
Krooglish word?
