Does anybody have any idea how I can connect a turntable to my
computer and get some music onto the computer from vinyl records?

Thanks for any ideas or help.

**If your turntable doesn't have a phono preamp built in (some modern ones
do, some don't), then connect the TT to an amplifier, which has a phono
preamp (some do, some don't). Then connect the tape out to your computer
sound card and you're away.

Yes they do - my wife has a Mac Book that is a very nice machine. I do
like Macs quite a bit (I'm typing this on an old iMac that we've had for
years) but most of my professional life requires the use of Windows.

I haven't used the Mac for any audio capture, but I have used a Toshiba
notebook to record some vinyl. For that, I have to use a USB audio
device because the sound card only accepts a mono input.

But it works well, and I've got some pretty simple software on the
Toshiba that I like for doing the capture/CD burning and possible
cleanup of the captured files, though I often find I don't clean them
much.

My daughter has a Mac Notebook. It cost her about 3 times what a similar
Windows laptop would have cost her. She paid $100s more for a MacIntosh
extended warranty. When she had a problem with it, she had to send the whole
notebook out of town to be checked out. The repair facility said - hey
there's a tiny dent in corner of the case, the machine is therefore abused
and we won't honor the warranty.

I don't think she's buying another Mac real soon!

Not only does the laptop input only accept mono, it also has too much gain
because it is a microphone input.

The good news is that USB audio devices that equal or better any laptops
line input are readily available and relatively inexpensive. One to avoid
is called the iMic. One to look for is the Behringer UCA 202.

http://www.samedaymusic.com/product--BEHUCA202

Probably on the shelf at your local Guitar Center.

very toxic words those are, "At least" as

It's Krooglish time!

fuliminate

fuliminate (v.i.): to defecate; to evacuate; (coll.) to shop for dinner
[etym: cf /feces/ and /eliminate/]

Too bad you messed up that reference to Stereophile, Arnii. You almost
had a perfect "debating trade" month notched. ;-)

"Mocking" does not compute. Please rephrase using known vocabulary
units. My Handy-Dandy Port-a-Kroo Translation Device™ suggests the
following vocab units as replacements:

measuring
quantifying
debating
fuliminating

What a coincidence: that's the same device that I use for capture. It
works well, and is quite cheap. I didn't care very much for the capture
software it came with though (I think it's Nero), but there are lots of
choices there.

I've got a MacBook Pro and the input is either stereo line level or optical.

Ok, now I'm just getting confused. Do I go with Instant Music, iMic,

I don't know what hardware you've got - if you would be so kind as to
list what computer you were planning on using, whether or not you've got
a turntable and so on it would be much easier to give advice.

Sounds good - do you have a receiver with a phono input? If so, you
shouldn't need any additional hardware (other than appropriate cabling).
You should be able to play your records on the turntable and run a cable
from your tape out into the sound card on your Dell.

You may want to get some software that helps with the capture/cleanup of
the records. There are a number of options out there, some of them free.

One shareware product that is pretty easy to use is called Spin It
Again:
http://www.acoustica.com/spinitagain/

It's not the most spophisticated software available for this purpose,
but it's very easy and the simplicity appeals to me.

Good luck!

You are very helpful! Yes, I do have a receiver with a phono input.
that's what it's connected to now. So, I need to cable from the back
of the receiver to the computer. Into the microphone jack? But I
will have to have software to capture the songs, right? I'm such a
novice at this.

No - you should plug it into the line input on the sound card, not the
microphone jack.

I think you might be a good candidate for the software that I mentioned
above:
http://www.acoustica.com/spinitagain/

The software has detailed instructions on hooking things up to your
computer and how to proceed with the recording. You can use the software
on a trial basis for 3 albums, after which you the software will cease
to work unless you buy it.

However, give it a try - I think you'll find that going through a couple
of albums will help you understand the process, after which you can
either buy the software or move on to something else.

The only thing that this software doesn't get quite right for me is the
song breaks on the albums. It's easy to go through after you've recorded
and set them correctly though, but it took me a couple of tries to
realize what was going on and to fix it.

Wow. Who knew?

Too much eggnog, Arny. (or not enough)

What you don't really see is that you have become
Arny's anime.
RAO is Rec.Arny.Opinion
Arny is insane, Arny is a hypocrite, Arny is this, Arny is that.
Without Arny pulling your string you got nothing.
I don't bother with this cesspool for a few weeks and in catching up
what do I find?
Aside from a classical music post and another know nothings
quest for guidance....RAO is all about Arny.
He wants it that way and you let him have it.
Who is the bigger fool?
The fool or those played by a fool.

ScottW

So I take it that you're done with Shhhh then?

And now for something completely idiotic.

Without Arny pulling your string you got nothing.

Scooter, every time you rev your "motor", you generate a surprise. Keep
up the weird work.

That's true. Arny's pawns are complete idiots.

I vacillate between thinking they are idiots and thinking that they are so
arrogant that they think what they do does anything but make them look
completely stupid.

Mostly I don't think about them at all - I just throw them a little meat so
that they can keep on humiliating themselves. It seems to be what they want
to do.

Wrong. They are closer than that.

You're so clueless. Ssshhhh is an ass, but he doesn't
suffer the same illness you feed in Arny.

How has Shhh's posting rate changed since you've been away?

Please, teach us more "lessons"...

The Idiot yapped:

No us...just you. George, Art, Stephen all know what Arny is.

We also know what you are.

It's all fun and games to them.

Speaking for myself, if I had some anti-Scottie disinfectant, I'd use
it.

IOW, you're nothing more than an insane troll.

It's nice to see you admit that you don't believe what you post.

Who said the insane could not make progress? Neither do any of the
sane!

Actually, I'm just gobstoppered that you entirely missed Jenn's point.

What a surprise.

Default Santa pencils in a lump of coal for The Idiot

IKYABWAIBorg Jr. whined:

The Idiot yapped:

Thanks for admitting the truth of my words.

Sorry to disappoint, but I have no idea what the point of your rant was
supposed to be. Assuming you had a point, that is.

As far as knowing what the Krooborg is, do you actually believe any of
us was trying to hide that knowledge? You were the last RAO regular to
"admit" Krooger is crazy, so logically, it's you who should "admit" to
the truth of your own screed.

It's all fun and games to them.

Speaking for myself, if I had some anti-Scottie disinfectant, I'd use it.

Sure...but if you had some anti-Arny spray...you wouldn't use it.

There you go again, arguing with yourself inside your own head. I think
maybe your "motor" is revving too fast. You should have your interior
world checked for excessive carbon monoxide.

You need him to play your favorite game.

Speaking of unintelligible babbling, have you learned to say "duh!" in
espanol?
