Default AT4041 and AT4047

Hey. I know i keep asking about mic comparisons, but i've come down to
these two mics, the AT4041, which is a condenser mic, and the AT4047
which is a large diaphragm condenser. from what i've read the AT4047 is
a great male vocal mic, acoustic guitar mic, drum overhead, etc. The
AT4041 is much cheaper, and i've heard that it is also good for the
applications i listed above, but has more of a hi frequency. I can get a
new 4047 for $400, which is $150 less than what it goes for on
swee****er.com and musiciansfriend.com. I assume if I bought both I
would have a great small and large diaphragm condenser mic, which would
be a great start for my mic collection which right now consists of a
shure sm 87 beta a and a sm-57 on the way. any comments or suggestions?

thanks for all the help.

They are totally different microphones which bear no connection with one
another.

No, not at all. The AT4047 is very, very pitched up and exaggerated on
top. The 4041 is only a little bit pitched up and exaggerated on top.
The 4041 sounds more or less the same off-axis, so you can use it in
the far field. The 4047 sounds really bizarre off-axis, so you can
turn it around to change the tone of vocals.

Personally, I'd recommend getting a neutral sounding microphone before
anything else.

I'm thinking, based on your basic line of inquiry in the posts you've
made, that you really need to save your money and test a whole lot of
microphones, bearing in mind that neutral, as Scott has said, is what
you need, and that price should be less an object.

The more money you have, the wider the choices. Now, that said, too
many choices can be a bad thing, but you have to consider that with so
few microphones, you need mics that will provide flexibility, that can
be used for more than the "one trick pony" that you seem to be
focusing upon.

I have the AT4041 and it is a good mic, and can be used for multiple
things, acoustic guitar, overheads (my use), vocals (back ups are what
I do with them and scratch tracks) and percussion. But it is bright on
the top, something you may not want.

I have not used the 4047 FET, but Scott addressed the issues there,
too. LDC's tend to be tailored these days to do one thing really well
and a couple other things just okay. That's not what you need. I do
have the 4050s and the 4040. I like the 4050s more than the 4040
because they're more versatile being multi patterned, C, O & 8. So I
don't use the 404 much and may be selling it soon to get something I
need, like a ribbon or two.

You would do well to test drive a few higher quality mics that offer
the versatility you need, which is where your energies should be
focused. Dont' rush into this. Talking with us is a good start because
we can give you some direction and feedback to what you're thinking.

If you have a local audio store, get to know them and they'll let you
borrow (not buy and return for refund) mics to demo at home in your
environment.

I also Have the 4041, 4047, and 4050 The 4041 and 4050 were the first
mics I bought and have served me very well. I did my research at the
time and thought these the best buy out there. I haven't been sorry I
bought them. The 4047 I got much later it is a great mic for the right
application, it is not my "go to" mic for vocals or guitar and if I
had to start again would still not be my first purchase.
I have since gotten several pairs of other small D condensers and
could sell you my 4041 if your interested? email me paul@glitchless

I still use the 4050's and 4047 for various things, but now have a
fair selection to choose from.

As the others have recommended, you really want a neutral, decent
sounding mic at this point. The 4047 is more of a special purpose mic.
I added one to the mic locker much later in the collection process. If
you could hold out for either an AT4050 (LDC) or an AT4051a (SDC) it
would be well worth it and something you wouldn't regret later. The
4041 is just a bit murky compared to the 4051a. I had a pair of those
for awhile and when I moved on to the 4051a I dispensed with the 4041.
Still use the 4051a even though there are plenty of nice mics at my
disposal now.
