[Note: This post is not a misplaced consumer one. I am not a frequent
poster, but I have been around for years.] The best earbuds I have found for my portable video player are the Creative OEM ones that came with my Muvo player. They have the highest efficiency transducers that I have been able to find anywhere. They make my Archos 604 and my Treo 700W loud enough to hear on an airplane. But they are wearing out. Are there some decent high efficiency earbuds available? (The Shure models with the rubber collars do not fit my ears at all.) Are there any with built-in amplifiers? Is there a travel-friendly in-line amplifier available (3.5 mm in and out) available? Finally, does anyone know if the Bose noise-canceling headphones have amplifiers? My hearing is not that bad yet, but the amplifiers in the Archos and the Treo leave MUCH to be desired. |

Can't work without 'em. My hearing is not that bad yet, but the amplifiers in the Archos and the Treo leave MUCH to be desired. Keep this nonsense up for too long, & your ears *will* be ruined. But that's your choice. As for the amps not being up to scratch, (what exactly do you find wrong with them?) how will different earbuds help? High efficiency earbuds will just mean that you'll have to turn down your output, & with the amps in these sorts of devices you'll be down into the noise floor- & you can't turn that down. Maybe it's time to get some etymotics. Proper coupling will boost your efficiency- if that's what you want. Or maybe it's time to consult an ear specialist. 'just play it loud, okay?' |

I've been happy with a pair of Etymotic ER6 isolator earphones. They claim 34dB of noise isolation, and I don't need to turn them up very loud if the background noise level is reduced by that much. Perfect on airplanes. Terrible for driving, cycling, or walking down the street; you really are in a world of your own. Mike T. |

If you get a pro level In-Ear-Monitor the isolation will be much better and consequently the need for high levels will be reduced. Consumer ear buds tend to promote very bad hearing hygene. I use Westone UM2 semi customs. I can be in the room with a loud band and run them such that the perceived loudness is 15 to 20 dB below the room SPL. That helps the hearing conservation. They sound better than closed headphones to me too. bobs Bob Smith BS Studios we organize chaos http://www.bsstudios.com |
