Default delta 44 low record level

Hi! I've bought a brand new delta 44 sound card.
I set the line level to -10db. It seems that it is recording low. When I
record with the sound blaster which comes on board, the record is higher.

I've read on some posts on this newsgroup that a preamp is needed between
the card and the mic.

Now, I don't want to spend 300 bucks on a preamp. What can I do to use the
power of the card and record in a decent level?

thanks,
Matias
