CD exists 25 years

in 1979, a Philips / Sony team of scientists (in a 60/40 % joint venture)
started the development of a follow up medium for compact cassette & vinyl.

The Compact Disc resulting had a 74 minute capacity, *so that Beethoven's
9th
Symphony would fit*. The first commercially released CD, august 17th, 1982,
was
'The Visitors' by ABBA. Commercial success of the format started in 1985,
with Dire Straits released on CD.
