In article writes: Did you read into my message? If you want to buy a half price console on eBay and then fight with crackly pots and intermittent switches, plus never really know how good it could sound until you start replacing capacitors, go ahead and save your money. i would rather have something that could use a bit of contact cleaner and eventually a recapping that provides a "better" to my ears sound than the typical cheaply made ic based mixers that i refferred to earlier. OK. Keep what you have until you can really afford something that you know is better. problem is, i don't have anything right now. the last record i did was with a rented spirit fx16, and i wouldnt mind a little step up in quality. By the way, if Hank is selling his Soundcraft 200, it's because he's found that his Mackie (or, in the studio, his ProTools system) does as good a job FOR HIM as the Soundcraft, and is 50 pounds lighter. He's not getting any younger, you know. apparently he has a 24 channel 8 buss allen & heath now, which i would fully expect to take over the soundcraft's duties. do a google search and you'll find him talking about how much better the 200b sounds than a mackie. on that note, i'm still waiting to hear from him about this, so hank if you're reading this please drop me an email. thanks |

i'm looking to buy a mixer as soon as possible, with the following preffered features: good sounding preamps (read: better than mackie/soundcraft spirit), good sounding semi-parametric eq, 4 buss, +4 op. level, direct outs, fully functional condition, and modularity would be a plus. some models i've been trying to find on ebay without much luck a soundcraft 200b and 400b, amek tac, allen & heath sr424, soundtracs. if anyone has any other suggestions in this price range, feel free to drop me a line. thanks. Zoom seemingly has the MRS-802CD-Digital Multitrack with CD-R/RW it's a 12 track mixer that has 2 dedicated tracks for drums and it's around $500 + US. I'm not sure how good it is or what the critics have to say about it, but it does look interesting. http://www.samsontech.com/products/p...1687&brandID=4 FWIW, makeitfunky |

I mean, look at the requirements for the initial query. Hell, my Solo was close to $10k new and it barely meets them. i'm just going on real life economics and trying to get a good deal. regardless of why, older consoles with decent features in good shape are going for a fraction of what they cost new. whether it's digital technology or streamlined production techniques for newer mixers, i'm just glad to be getting into this at a time when deals like this do in fact exist. |

Yeah, but in some cases you're talking penny wise and pound foolish. Unless
you know what shape the unit is in you could be talking about serious restoration work. Noisy pots and faders, caps needing replacement, etc. Plus, you still have some pretty strong requirements for $500. I'm not saying it's impossible, just highly improbable. Particularly in getting good mic pres, musical EQ and good routing. I wasn't kidding when I said I had to spend some serious good bucks for something like you're describing. -- Roger W.
