I'm watching the DVD of Candide. What a great work, and what a
definitive performance. And how melancholy it makes one that Lenny,
Jerry Hadley, and Adolf Green are now gone. What better way to spend
$20 in this life than to own things such as this?!

Time was, you could get half an ounce of sin semilla for $20.

If I may spoil your rapture with a conehead question, how does the fidelity
compare with the CD? Is it the same performance?

I can't really comment on the sound of the DVD, as I don't have a home
theater setup; just a TV with little speakers. The DVD is of one of two
live concerts, while the CD of this cast was made the week following the
concerts. The singing principals are in obviously better vocal health
in the studio than they were in the concert hall. A huge flu epidemic
was going around London at that time and just about every singer (and
Lenny, already in fading health; he would pass away about 6 months
later) was affected. Still, they sang great in the concert, but were
even better for the CD. Hadley was amazing. The soprano, June
Anderson, was also fine, but is not my favorite in that difficult role
(Barbara Cook is hard to beat). The DGG sound is better than many of
their releases, which is faint praise, IMO. The sound of the soprano is
a bit harsh at times, as it is for the high brass, but better than most
DGG recordings.

Just hearing Lenny conduct "Make Our Garden Grow" is worth far more than
the price of admission.

I don't know what sound quality is possible from youtube, but it's not
SOTA.

Also a bunch of G&BGs up, including Dessay, Chenoweth, Sumi Jo, besides
June Anderson from the Bernstein concert.

Surely you can listen to the DVD hooked to your two channel system?

Different room. If Bob were to ask, I would unhook it and take it to
the other room. He'd let me know if he would like me to do that, I'm
sure.

I've always considered "Lenny" to have never been able to mount the
podium without making a spectacle of himself, and never much able to
bring anything to a work others did not exceed. In other words as a
symphonic conductor I think he was mediocre.

Thanks for your opinion.

Damned good, but not nearly as long lasting.
