The treble is strong and smooth, a rare combination in the CDs I've come across. But XRCD is also a dead format walking: it's based on standard CD, like HDCD. Hopefully JVC will take their wonderful mastering process to make DVD-As and SACDs. CD I am so glad that you mentioned Mighty Same McClain. What is the name of that XRCD? I want to pick it up. One of my top two or three favorite SACDs and certainly my favorite vocal of any genre or format is Mighty Sam McClain's "Soul Survivor" from the Audioquest label. This compilation of some of Mighty Sam McClain's best, are as quoted from the insert "are pure analog recordings. Of course, I am not giving all or even most of the credit to SACD. These recordings are superb, the musicianship is simply world class, and all tracks according to the information on the insert "were recorded @30 ips direct to two track tape". But analog recording such as this and original DSD recordings have really allowed SACD to shine in a way that I have never heard on CD. Among the 200+ SACDs that I own transfers of original PCM recordings simply don't work as well, for whatever reasons. Robert C. Lang |

The fine print of this XRCD says that it is 1993 Audioquest music licensed to JVC for XRCD. Here's a review of the XRCD I have, Give it Up to Love; http://www.soundstage.com/music/reviews/rev171.htm Let us know how XRCD compares to SACD. CD |
