Default DVD player good for audio systems?

Been out of the audio scene for years and I need to update my CD
player, also being on a tight budget Im not sure if the best way to go
would be with a "budget" DVD player or an older single tray model CD
player from the early 90's? Dont care for the multi disc players.

Most of the big chain electronic gadget stores dont seem to carry many
CD players anymore but rather the slim looking DVD players.

Advice appreciated, thanks for reading.

Look for "universal" players as an improvement over the really cheap DVD
players. Denon, Pioneer, Sony all make inexpensive models. I like my
Pioneer DV-563A, but it's no longer in production, AFAIK. The Pioneer
Elite DV-46AV might be roughly equivalent.

Thanks for this post, I'm also thinking if I should upgrade my cd player.
If I decide on it, I'll stick with 2 ch stereo. I'm interested what are
currently available out there. The last cd player I bought was the sacd
Marants 4-5 yrs. ago. You might be interested to look here to get some
idea.

It is.

Yep, Kal is one of the good guys. He writes for Stereophile (and is damn
good at it, imo) and does a masterful job of not getting drawn into ugly
flame wars no matter how tempting.

Yes but I sometimes fail.

Completely ignoring the likes of the Krooborg and Sillybot would be
superhuman. You're excused for your occasional lapses.
