Default Howdy and a newbie question!

Howdy Johnboyt here!

It is great to be on board!

I have a beginner's problem. I have a Dell desktop, an m-audio fast
track pro, an SE 2200a mic, and cool edit pro latest edition before
adobe. My goal is to master what I have before I upgrade. I am a
singersongwriter guitarist who would like to be doing drum loops and
adding bass parts to my songs, but I haven't the knowledge to progress
from where I am right now.....

I am recording my acoustic and or electric and vocals.

I wish to eventually mix and master in stereo. Currently, I am cutting
mono tracks in multi-track view by panning the tracks left and right
in order to hear mono(this sounds better to the novice ear then the
spearated stereo tracks....). So I am unable to figure out how to
disect these tracks and operate on them in edit view. I can see them
lying in edit view individually, but how do I work on them in edit
view when I haven't the knowledge on whether I can even play them
together? They sound so fricking retarded by themselves.

So what is the theory, record in strereo, mix in strereo, stay in
stereo.? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
It's so beautiful outside here in the midwest! Have a wonderful warm
safe day!

blessings,

Johnboy
