As part of my quest to obtain all of the Bach Cantatas, this weekend I
picked up yet another issue by Gardiner/Monteverdi Choir/English Baroque
Soloists. This monumental project of performming (then recording) all
of the church cantatas on the liturgical feast days for which they were
written is loved by some critics and loathed by others for their musical
qualities. I find the recordings to be a mixed bag so far: never
terrible, but sometimes missing the expressive mark. The one I bought
this weekend is Vol. 15, containing four of the Christmas Cantatas. I
think that the sound is just fantastic on this CD. In particular, the
harpsichord sound is almost right; the best CD harpsichord sound I've
yet heard. It was recorded at NYC's St. Bartholomew's.

A few weeks ago through your prompting I started listening to all of
the Bachs cantatas available on CD and LP.
One day I'll get around to posting my nonscientific impressions.

Hello,
you seem to be familiar with the Bach cantatas, what do you think of
the Harnoncourt version, that's the only one i've got ?
By the way, do you know why BWV 15, 53, 141, 142, 160, 190, 191, 193
are missing?

the Harnoncourt version, that's the only one i've got ?

I like the Harnoncourt a lot. Some people consider them to be a bit
"tame" as original versions go. I disagree.

By the way, do you know why BWV 15, 53, 141, 142, 160, 190, 191, 193
are missing?

They are now considered to be by other composers. For example, 15 is by
J.L. Bach, others are really by Telemann, etc.
