Hello,
Im sure many of you are familiar with the Sony DVF file format which is used on their digital voice recorders. I have a very crucial question. I have recently recieved a DVF file which contains an audio recording of a conversation between me and another person. The contents of this discussion are of paramount importance to me. I have very firm reason to believe that the file was spliced together or somehow otherwise edited. Things that were said are not in sequence and some parts are missing and replaced with discussion we had at a later time in the conversation. The question is proving this. I was wondering if anybody here knows any way possible to edit the DVF file format that would make it hard to detect when undergoing forensic testing. Some information I have gleaned about the format is the following. The digital recording contains administrative data (not audio data) in the first 10 bytes of each block contain that administrative data. The first 4 bytes of the 10 bytes contain the time and date: 2 for each. Each block is 1.1 seconds of audio recording. Going into the administrative data, it reflects the time and date of the block. The forensics expert has inspected the headers containing the administrative data and has found no discontinuities in the time and date of the headers for each block. Is there any way to get around this to where it would not be detectable to a forensics examiner who has tested it through the method above? Is there ANY way possible for this file to have been edited without detection? How does one inspect these headers that contain administrative data? Can anybody reading this think of any way this couldve been done? Again I am positive this file was edited im just trying to figure out how. I have wondered about whether the file couldve been converted to mp3 or wav edited then saved again as DVF although im not sure if that would support the administrative data that appears to show no discontinuities. I have also wondered whether the file couldve been edited and played back on a computer while a "clean" copy was made of it, a clean copy that would not register as having any discontinuities because it is a recording of a recording. Can you change the "rec date" embedded in the file? Does anybody know of any programs besides "Sony Digital Voice Editor" that can SAVE in dvf format? (I know Switch can open it but i have been unable to save the dvf file in this program) Please please let me know your thoughts. The contents of this recording is causing me much grief and sleepless nights. If I can somehow prove its edited, that would make my life SO much easier. Thanks! Jimmy |
