A friend of mine picked up a bunch of old LPs, including some boxed
sets. Many classical, some kids' albums. He's not into vinyl, so I
suggested he put them on ebay. Anybody know a site to find out market
value of classical LPs?

I've always looked at ebay as setting the market value.

There used to be a book published on classical LP values that cost
something like $200. I don't know if that's still out there. To me it
was as valid as the Scott catalog for philatelists: the values were
always on the high end, and only the most absolutely pristine examples
ever came close to that at auction.

I think some of the earliest Living Stereo or London Bluebacks are the
most valuable classical LPs. Stamper numbers, labels, and (of course)
condition seem to be the variables important to collectors.Mobile
Fidelity and other similar labels aimed specifically at audiophiles
also seem to hold their value.

Has your friend tried to search any of the titles on ebay's "completed
items" in their advanced search? That's a pretty good indicator of
what people are willing to pay IMO.

I have a sealed Steely Dan MFSL "Katy Lied" LP. This site has one
listed at $153 and another at $305. This is why I think ebay is valid.
I've seen this LP go for $100-200 on ebay.

Jethro Tull...

$30 seemed a bit low to me so I passed.

Well, I checked out Scottie's site. Not very helpful. The purpose for
getting an idea of the market value is to set the opening amount high
enough so as to avoid giving away something valuable. It's usually
easiest just to start low and hope auction fever sets in, so that's what
I'll tell him.

I enjoy that album. I wish I had some sort of remastered CD on that.
The redbook cd issued back in the 80s was terrible to listen through
electrostat. The song "Everyones Gone To The Movies" on that platter
always take me back. A bitty dainty tune which makes me click and tick
my tainted battered feet to beat my startled shattered toes.

auction results would still be "not very helpful" to you.

You're quite welcome. I found the search interesting. I spent yesterday
checking the vinyl selection at Stereo Unlimited in San Diego.
Jenn had mentioned a while back they have a fine selection of new and used
vinyl.
She wasn't kidding. My complaint was actually too much selection in too little
space with 3 rows of tightly packed records on the floor.
Flipping through the top row was easier enough and that would have taken all
day.
The bottom two rows was a pain.
The selection is mostly classical but the rock, pop, soul, jazz & blues are
still
worth a visit.

Glad that you found it to your liking. It think that it's the best LP
store currently standing that I've been to. Back in the 80s, while
living in the Victorville/Apple Valley area, we'd vacation in SD,
staying on Shelter Island, going to the zoo and beaches by day, and
several nights in a row at the Old Globe. I'd go by Stereo Unlimited
and get a bunch of issues of IAR, Absolute Sound, Stereophile, etc. for
reading material on the beach. I think it was there (or maybe Absolute
Audio in Santa Ana) that I fell in love with the Quads. Fun times.

That's the best way to judge the value of LPs these days. The prices
fluctuate too frequently, so most references such as books are
probably obsolete within a few weeks after they're printed. One
single reissue can drastically affect the market (like when "Casino
Royale" was re-released a few years ago).
