Thanks! Are they *still* making SACDs? There's still market for them in Europe and Japan. In the USA, not so much. ___ -S "As human beings, we understand the world through simile, analogy, metaphor, narrative and, sometimes, claymation." - B. Mason |

It's the same market via the internet. Yes, but one tends to pay a hefty premium for buying from overseas, where the selection is better. I doubt there's a much of a groundswell of SACD/DVD-A sales in the USA even when internet imports are factored in. So I stand by my 'not so much'. If there were a significant market here, we'd see more popular releases in SACD/DVD-A format. As it stands, we see mainly niche products domestically, these days, and those are primarily 'classical' recordings: thus constituting a small part of a an already small market. And for 'big' sellers like Dark Side of the Moon or the Stones SACDs or LOVE, there's simply no way to tell without considerable new market research, how many people bought them for their 'hi rez' aspect, versus having a surround mix, versus just having a new release of old material. How many Stones SACDs, for example, were sold to people who only have CD players? It's notable that the Genesis catalogue reissue is being released as CD/DTS here, versus CD/SACD/DTS in Europe and Japan. ___ -S "As human beings, we understand the world through simile, analogy, metaphor, narrative and, sometimes, claymation." - B. But that's exactly where the market is active and international. As I have opined befo The market for pop/rock releases in hi-rez and/or multichannel is relatively small, compared to that market segment at large, and, as a result, the record companies see no economic value in issuing them except for a few block-busters, as you have noted. OTOH, the small (in relative and absolute terms) classical market seems to support these formats better, perhaps, because of the demographics of the classical market and, perhaps, because of the attitudes of the smaller companies that produce them.
