I acquired a pair of MG1 Cs this weekend.

My older 4 pieces of MG1- Improved now serve as "sub" woofers, with 24
dB/oct Butterworth active filtering at 80 Hz (LM4562 opamps), driven
by a MOSFET power amplifier.
The MG1C handles everything above that corner frequency and is driven
by a KT88 PP in triode tube amp.

Pure heaven. Madness. Happiness. Big, big smile on my face.

Cool! Maggies were the first real high end speakers I heard as a kid.

Thanks!

Here's a picture of the setup, not yet correctly placed at the moment
I took it:

Each side has 2 MG1i panels hinged together, in a V-shape with the
MG1C in front of them.

Even though I know their dispersion pattern permits it, it's weird to
see speakers next to the side wall like that!

If you ran all them full range, would it sound like Allisons?

It works. I tried different placing, at the long side of the room,
with standing wave problems as a result.

This isn't optimal, but it's good enough at the moment.

Where's Howard when we need him?

Although the pair of puppy dog would most likely not mistaken it
for fire hydrant, you might want to look after the portly tabby. It look
like it's just waiting for your head to turn away so it can have fun
on the maggies.

Agree. Given the right room, I'd certainly have them again.

Yeah, that's the rub. They can sound wonderful if you can really set
them up right and give them the space they need.

I loved Maggie Mae the first 500 times that I heard it (which occurred
in the first month it came out), in spite of the fact that Rod Stewart
sounds like he gargles with Comet.

Bratwig galumphed:

If I wanted a dipole, I'd prefer electrostats personally.

I'm sure we'll all treasure your opinion.

But I'm not huge

We inferred that, but did you have to confirm it?

But you need[sic] to buy what you like nad not listen to other opinions.

Not to worry, Brattie -- nobody's listening to yours.

Consider the maintenance.

Maggies offer nearly all the advantages of electrostatics, but without
the fuss about moisture and decreasing efficiency.

A Quad 63 refurbish is about 1500 euro here.
If you're unlucky, an overhaul will be necessary each 10 years or so.

Quad 988 is still one of my favourites, but I'm not prepared to fork
over a huge amount of money each 10 years.

Mangepans (and Apogees etc) are almost maintenance-free (at least the
newer foil-types.)
The old ones can suffer from wire coming loose, glueing it back is
easy.
Keeping them out of direct sunlight helps a lot.

Some Apogees have a factory problem, that will take exactly one
repair.
After that, you can play till eternity or until the magnets wear out.

One can easily forget that Apogees require a major electrical sub-station to
power them, which puts the maggies in the more useful catagory of being able
to be powered by receivers such as the new Panasonics with the class T
Tripath digital amplifier technology.

Maggies do fine with tube amplification as well.
Just make sure they're triode(d) push pull amps with a suitable 4 ohms
tap.
