Default Lifting audio from a dvd.

Someone wants me to make and audio only cd copy of a dvd. What's the
easiest way to do that short of plugging a dvd player into my
recording setup and letting it play through?

That's it. DVDs are so screwed up as far as copy protection goes, and
they're typically 96 kHz sample rate and some form of data
compression. If you copy audio out to audio in you'll have full
control of the copy process. Sure, it's real time, but you're charging
by the hour, aren't you? g

Just check by playing the DVD in a spots to be sure you have the
record level set properly to accommodate loud peaks without clipping.
Once you're set up, there should be no need to sit there and monitor
it unless you're conscientious (and you really ARE getting paid by the
hour). Just be there to stop it in time.

That's the easiest way. Maybe the only practical way.

As far as "practical", and depending what platform he is on, this is the

Been there, done that.

What's the easiest way to do that short of plugging a dvd

You want cheap or you want easy, or you want accurate?

Cheap involves simply recording the analog output of a DVD player. Probably
the best thing to do if you have exactly one DVD to transcribe this way.

Beyond that, you have to tell more about the DVD in question. If the DVD is
copy-protected, asking questions about how to breech IP protection is not a
good idea on a forum like this, which is largely devoted to the business of
creating IP.

For example, a non-protected DVD (e.g. a DVD you burned with a stand-alone
DVD recorder) can be readily transcribed in the digital domain using
inexpensive software such as Adobe Premiere Elements to load it to disk.
There's an export function in APE for writing just the audio track out as a
file on disk, in your choice of formats.

I user mplayer for this:

mplayer dvd:// -vc null -vo null -ao pcm:fast

I do music for telly sometimes, so have an automated system for ripping audio/
video, replacing the audio track with a synchronised new one and burning audio/
video to a new DVD.

What computer/os are you using?

For Wintel try:

http://www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor/

Converts all (?) DVD-Video audio formats to most common audio filetypes,
including LPCM, FLAC, MP3, etc.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm just going to go from the player into the
recorder. For what it's worth, it's a non-protected dvd and I use
Windows.
