Hi
Finally found a hi-fi group! I currently own a NAD C370 amp, NAD 530 CD player and Generation 1 B&W 601's. I want to upgrade to floorstanding speakers. I have been out of the speaker loop for a while. I live in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada!) . Any thoughts on a good floorstanding speaker? I am somewhat limited by budget, but I assume a couple of grand would be the numbers I would be looking at. Thanks! muk. |

It's a slightly simplified version of the 800 series, or you may be able to get something like a CDM 9 at 'closeout' prices, since the 700 series effectively replaces the CDMs. -- Stewart Pinkerton | Music is Art - Audio is Engineering |

Hi Muk,
Wow, that is pretty hard to say, I would look at the Paradigm Studio 100v2's though, if you like B&W, I think they have a lot in common, but may be a little more or less this or that, giving you a nice alternative. I tend to prefer the soft dome sound, assuming a good soft dome tweeter is used, but that is just a preference. and If you are able to, the best bet it so look around, and buy with an ability to return if the speakers do not work out in your system... -- Best Regards, Lou "muk" wrote in message news:Gh1nb.37944$Fm2.16328@attbi_s04... Ref: Speaker recommendations...
Muk... You have an excellent series of speakers made right there in your Native land...over on the Eastern side of the Country. Paradigm..a broad line of excellent speakers with many many choices. Spend some time looking at them. Most all critics have indicated that they are equal to many other lines that cost two to three times the money. Excellent reviews across the board! Good Luck.. Can be had from $2400 down to (if you are lucky) $1800. Very hard to beat for under $5-7,000. |

Just a thought Muk, if you have been reasonably happy with the B&W all these
years, perhaps a mere crossover upgrade is in order? Mills resistors to replace what every they used, AuriCaps by-passed with RTX Multicaps, or Black Gates and RTX's where you cannot use a film and foil, and Alpha Core coils to replace the stock coils? Now - not better towers, but B&W hits $2000 for the same sound well before the other two. Another option would be to go used. A pair of sometihng like KEF 104/2s is mint condition should run you about $1000-$1200. They are going to whomp on anything new for that price. |

Absolutely not! Crossovers are *designed* with the known losses of the components in mind, replacing with 'superior' components will in most cases *not* provide an improvement. Indeed, B&W state exactly this. -- Stewart Pinkerton | Music is Art - Audio is Engineering |

Well Stewart, it is true that you can use lousy parts to cover up other
issues, but with a good design, even with inexpensive drivers, you can get them to sound pretty good using better components. OTOH, if you really think B&W is masking issues, then perhaps an upgrade would be the wrong way to go. I know that there are times that a coils resistance may come into play, or some such, but generally that is only a ohm and if you hear something amiss, you can toss in a 1 ohm mills to compensate. I suspect B&W tells folks that so they do not destroy their speakers, B&W likely suspects, and generally rightly so, that moders really do not know what they are doing... -- Best Regards, Lou "Stewart Pinkerton" wrote in message news:iTxnb.39308$ao4.83604@attbi_s51... You can't go wrong with either Paradigm or Energy. Theses are both Canadian
Makers so you will get a better value for the dollar that if you bought American or British made speakers. Both these companies offer excellent "bang for your buck" I have speakers from both these companies and I am very pleased with them. Paradigm Reference Studio 60's or check out Mirage, again both Canadian. The
Sound Room on W 4th sells Paradigm. Linn Ninka's might be a good choice, Sound Plus on West Broadway sells Linn and Mirage. Although you are creaping over the Cdn $2000.00 a bit for the Ninka's.
