Hi all,
I am looking for recommendations for a used preamp. something in the price range of 600 us dollars. I need at least 4 line inputs one of which could be a tape monitor. I also need a good phono section. I am currently using a Quicksilver line stage preamp. My system consists of a Velodyne DD-18 Aragon 8008BB and Hails Revelation 3. I had a home made tube preamp that I used before I got the Velodyne but the preamp seemed to have a problem driving the lower impedance of the Velodyne over the 30 foot run of twisted Teflon interconnects. Guess it was a poor design and not meant to drive a SS amp. In any case I want to go with SS with a built in phono section. Many many years ago I used to by all new and change systems like crazy. These days I buy used and am much more conservative. Some thoughts that came to mind were an old Threshold ns sl 10 Classe dr 5 Sunfire Reference preamp, but I am open to any ideas. Thanks Bill T |

Before you discard your current pre-amp, have you tried gold plated patch
cords? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=240-043 Your Velodyne needs a line level signal and if you lose some of the high frequencies, it makes little difference. Actually, before you do anything, move the Velodyne unit next to the pre-amp. Use a standard 6 foot audio patch cable and see whether the pre-amp can drive the Velodyne unit. If it can, then the 25 ft gold plated patch cords ought to work. If it can't then there is an incompatibility between the pre-amp and the Velodyne unit or the Velodyne unit is defective. Hope this helps ... Regards, Jerry wrote in message ... Hi all, I am looking for recommendations for a used preamp. something in the price range of 600 us dollars. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks |

See if you can find an Apt-Holman preamp. It has all the features you
are looking for. ---MIKE--- In the White Mountains of New Hampshire (44° 15' N - Elevation 1580') |

Thanks Bill T Many of the AR tube preamps are around. They also make SS preamps. Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/AUDIO-RESEARCH-H...em170083363167 |

If you are happy with the Quicksilver except for its lack of phono input, and if one of its line inputs is free, ....why not invest in a good used phonostage such as the Audio Research PH2 or PH3....they are available on eBay and Audiogon for about the $600 or less. And if you can stretch a bit, Sutherland now has a PH3D batter-driven phono stage that is getting rave reviews (I personally use a modified Marcof PPA-2 battery driven headamp and believe in the battery approach for these high-gain units). |
