We had a marvelous trip to the SF Bay area this weekend, which included
a stop at one of my favorite record/audio stores. The Analog Room in
San Jose is just a great place with knowledgeable, friendly staff, great
systems and an incredible record section. On this trip I picked up only
two LPs there; one was a copy of one of the *seven* re-releases of
Mercury's "Folk Song Suites and other British Band Classics" with Fred
Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Somehow this particular
re-release had eluded me over the years, and I had to have it for my
FF/EWE collection.

The other disk may be of some interest here. It's a 2004 re-release of a
1964 Vanguard recording of folk duo Ian and Sylvia featuring their big
hit "Four Strong Winds". This is a Cisco production and the sound is
just amazing. The steel string guitar and autoharp are among the best
I've heard. I & S always performed well on recordings and this one is
certainly no exception. They had kind of a quirky history as shown by
the fact that they were the models for the Mitch and Mickey characters
in the funny folk send-up movie "A Mighty Wind".

Anyway, if you like 60s folk music and GREAT reproduction of acoustic
steel string instruments, you might like this recording.

BTW, Amoeba just keeps getting more and more popular (read: busy), and
for good reason. I would imagine that the closing of Tower has really
helped the two Bay area Amoeba stores.

P.S. I forgot to mention that the Mercury re-release is the worst of
the many of that recording. IIRC, it was done just before everything
changed at Mercury, and this recording shows some of the negative
effects of that change. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't need it
to complete my collection of FF/EWE/Mercury recordings. The number is
SR90388. Just FYI...

From my admittedly limited knowledge of folk music my conclusion is

that the best thing folk can do is to leave composing to the composers
(vide Liszt, Brahms and Bartok dances, Chopin mazurkas etc.)

To each his/her own, of course. As you know, I love "classical" music
more than all other genres, but I like some other types of music as
well. Not a lot of other types, but some ;-)
