Hi,

I'd like to buy new speaker for my stereo. I have a Sony amplifier
with 100W output (STR-DG500). I have a limited budget, but I'd be
ready to put 500EUR/piece if it's worth it. Of course, as I don't have
a high-end stereo, I'd rather not invest in anything my stereo
wouldn't allow me to enjoy.

I'm mostly listening to electronic music, but not only techno with
pounding bass, so I'm looking for a good rendering of electronic
sounds at all ranges. For instance, I love ambient music which has
almost no bass, or IDM with many high-pitch bleeping sounds as well as
downtempo with grooooovy bass.

Also, ideally, as I live in an apartment, I'd like to get good sound
at low to average volume. Now, I'm aware I may be asking for much as
such price! :-)

Would anyone have any recommendation as to the manufacturers I should
be looking at?

This newsgroup is generally low on audio discussion and big on insults,
so you might try your request at rec.audio.high-end. It is moderated
though and it can take a while to get any answers.

In any case...

It's pretty hard for me to recommend specific manufacturers as I don't
really know what's available in your area - I'm assuming you are in
Europe. However, Paradigm seem to have a good presence in Europe and
some of their products would be well worth a listen. B&W is an old
stand-by as well and produce some nice speakers.

Probably I'd recommend that you look into a pair of bookshelves + a
subwoofer, though a sub can be a bit much in an appartment. It's just
that at your budget level, that's really the easiest way to get the bass
that you will want in some of your music. You might find that something
like a pair of Paradigm monitor floorstanders are within financial reach
and they could be quite satisfying, though you still won't get the bass
extension that you will with a sub.

I wonder if Magneplanar is sold in France. The MMG is inexpensive and
sounds good at low volume. High volume is its problem! Adding a sub
might be a challenge.

I've had mixed experience with Triangle, but their speakers designed to
be easy on amps and must be cheaper in France than here.
