Default Noise when I adjust my volume control

I have an Onkyo reciever that makes a static-like noise when I adjust
the volume up or down.

Any ideas on how to remedy this problem?

Get a can of good electronic contact cleaner and apply it to the innards of
the noisy control while cycling the control over its useful range.

Arnii "en-juh-near" Krooger plops on a newbie.

Get a can of good electronic contact cleaner

What Arnii means, of course, is that all electronic contact cleaners are
equally good and cannot be distinguished in properly-bias-controlled,
dosage-matched, spray-synchronized DBTs. Imputations of quality connoted
by loaded words like "good", "bad", "honest", "human", etc. are completely
inappropriate to debates involving siccncnceccee.

Now, George, Arnie was being helpful here---IOW, behaving well. If you
attack him during periods of good, helpful behaviour he'll get
confused as to what is expected of him, resulting no doubt in a
snowstorm of snot. Will this be a Good thing? I think not.

Come on Paul, don't be naive. George lives for snowstorms of snot.
He trolls for them almost daily.

Disagreed.™ As I took pains to point out, Mr. **** unloosed the beginning
of a snotstorm by pretending to know which contact cleaners are "good" and
which aren't.

If you attack him during periods of good, helpful behaviour he'll get

Did you say "snowstorm of snot"? You're belaboring the metaphor.

Will this be a Good thing? I think not.

Congratulations on proofreading your post.

**Arny's suggestion is the best one, for a cheap remedy. IME, however, there
are several issues:

* Replacement of the pot may be the best option, albeit the most expensive.
* There may be a fault in the amp, which places a DC Voltage on the pot and
this is causing the noise. If this is the case, no amount of cleaning (or
replacing) the pot will help.

Trevor has it exactly right. Cleaning a pot may be just a short-term remedy.
However, it is cheap and easy and its the most reasonable first step.
Whether you know it or not, you probably did a little pot cleaning by simply
rotating it this way and that during normal use. Based on past experience,
the problem will probably return.

The Krooborg, frenzied, falls into the sewer in a desperate search for
fresh turds.

Trevor has it exactly right.

Then why didn't you tell him that yourself, Turdy? This debacle is still
more proof that your ulterior motives for polluting Usenet are far from
the phoney generosity you proclaim.
