Hi,
I have a Kenwood KA-907 amp that has recently developed problems (seemingly unrelated). First off, one channel (I believe it's the right if I hooked it up correctly) has been cutting in and out and never works at all unless the DC Coupling switch is thrown. The second problem appears to be a mechanical problem with the on/off switch. For a while, the off position wouldn't turn the amp totally off. I would get no output but the power indicator light would be on. Now the switch will physically not move down. This has all happened while the amp was stationary and actually used rather rarely. My question is: are these problems easily repairable and if so by who? Additionally I'm running it through JBL L112 speakers which are killing but the foam of the woofers of which is rapidly deteriorating (how's that for syntax?). I've done some Googling which seems to suggest replacing the foam might be more trouble than it's worth (I'm not helpless with such repairs but I'm not exactly handy either). Do any experts have opinions on whether it's worth it? If not, what are some comparable modern speakers? Final question that may be a bit OT: very generally, are there any really great headphones that can be had for under $100? I'm just looking to use them for general listening (primarily jazz, some "classical" and some pop). Thanks! -Adam |

My question is: are these problems easily repairable and if so by who? I'll leave this one to others more technically adept. Additionally I'm running it through JBL L112 speakers which are killing but the foam of the woofers of which is rapidly deteriorating (how's that for syntax?). Do any experts have opinions on whether it's worth it? If not, what are some comparable modern speakers? Lots of good modern speakers, but if you like the L112's, refoaming is just not that difficult. I think you should definitely consider this. Final question that may be a bit OT: very generally, are there any really great headphones that can be had for under $100? I'm just looking to use them for general listening (primarily jazz, some "classical" and some pop). I use a pair of Koss Pro 4aa's for listening to jazz late night...very fine. The phones are fairly heavy, and may become fatiguing after an hour and a half or so, but I know of nothing at the price that sounds better ($79 at J&R Music World). BTW, I also use these phones for mastering when I do recording, and find them highly accurate. If you like your sound bright, you can buy Sony 7306 phones at J&R, Musicians Friend, etc. for $99. They are popular in recording studios for pop musicians, but have a reputation for brightness and I personally could not live with them, having tried them. Hope this helps. Thanks! -Adam |
