I doubt it is easy to fix this without some butchering that will destroy the exterior look, and as I don't know your skill with a soldering iron this is difficult to handle without standing with the parts. On the other hand: The cartridge is worthless as it is, so why not try to do some butchering, comforted by the fact, that the stylus is the expensive part of the package. The worst thing that can happen is, that you will have to buy a new cartridge, and if the stylus you have is fine, perhaps an extra stylus isn't that bad - either buy an upgrade cartridge like OM 20 or 30 - or a PRO pickup if you have many worn records from the past/fleamarkets etc. If you do have luck to butcher and solder the "patient", you'll be proud of yourself and feel less clumsy afterwards. Good luck. Henrik. Thanks for the tips, I will try the butchering, as you say I have nothing to lose. I do get a lot of my records from flea markets etc, why is the ortofon pro so good for this type of thing regards justin |

Newsgroups: rec.audio.high-end Sent: Wednesday, August 27, 2003 7:07 AM Subject: ortofon OM10 Broken can anyone help!! I do get a lot of my records from flea markets etc, why is the ortofon pro so good for this type of thing regards justin The PRO, PRO S, Broadcast E etc. can - being more rugged and playing with a higher tracking force - be a fine option for playing the often warped and less than perfect records you may sometimes find in flea markets. On some records, you may find, that even a tiny change in the shape of the stylus will make a record that you would otherwise have discarded, tolerable. Also for worn mono records (45 singles for example) the PRO or PROs in some cases is a better choice than the D25M stylus originally invented for monorecords. The OM/Concorde is perhaps not he best cartridge in the world, but it is very versatile. It can easily be swapped from hifi (OM 40, 30....) to shellac (OM 78) via all the different PRO/disco versons for rugged use playing old, worn and imperfect records. Sorry if this is beginning to sound a bit off-topic, but although not strictly a high-end discussion it is about how you get the best out of the worst records. Yours Henrik. |
