Judging by the discussion at www.audioasylum.com and at
www.stevehoffman.tv/forums I and a few others think it is less than it
could be, while many others are enthralled. I'd summarize it this way:

1) Where you can find clean versions of the original songs, the sound on
DVD-A reflects the virtues of hi-rez multichannel (dynamic range, accurate
percussion and high-frequency instrumental sound, space and air that
separate out and allow more listening into the sound). However the sound is
"flat" sounding and lacks "body" compared to many other hi-rez reissues made
from analog tapes in both DVD-A and SACD. At times, vocals shade into a
light "grittiness".

2) The CD version is more compressed..sounds great compared to previous
CD's, and actually sounds more like the LP's than does the DVD-A version.

3) The DVD-A version has no stereo tracks...if you've got two channel DVD-A
it will go into auto mixdown mode.

4) One person commented that he thought voices on the DTS multichannel mix
sounded better than the DVD-A...I have no way to judge.

Generally the album is getting rave reviews but there a substantially
majority of us (weighted towards but not exclusively we "old fogies") who
find the mashup alterations and transitions pretty pureile in nature and
distracting from enjoyment, however appropriate it might be to Cirque de
Soleil.

I'm no colossal Beatles fan but I think this detracts from the
original songs and should be left alone.

Well, the easy answer is that without the commission from Cirque de Soleil,
which seems to have engaged the Beatles attention, we apparently wouldn't
have anything in high res. It's a shame, really, as reissuing the Beatles
CD's would make the Stones reissues and Dylan reissues minor events. More
importantly, it might actually get the average home theatre consumer to
listen to (and perhaps even like) multichannel sound.

I'm taking a chance on this one in hope that the record company takes
the hint for the regular titles. Too bad Dylan and the Rolling Stones
didn't inspire me the way the Kinks and Living Stereo reissues did.
