Default ProTools LE "valid audio volume" (hard-drive) dilemma. HELP!

I hate upgrading! I've Googled here and in DUC with no success and
must beg for y'all's expertise once again. Thanks in advance, as
always! :)
I'm now on Mac OS 10.4.8 running ProTools LE 7.1.cs10. The
ProTools application opens up but "Preferences" and "Disk Allocation"
are grayed out and it won't let me open a session. It starts to open,
but when it asks where I want to save the session I get a message
saying "Session must be on an audio record volume". When I go to
"Workspace", select a drive and try to change the letter in the "A"
column to read "R" for "record", I get a message saying. "HD cannot be
designated as an audio record volume because it is not a valid audio
volume". This includes an external drive on which I had previously
recorded plenty of PT sessions (PT 6.4 on OS 10.3.9) and another new
one which I reformated as non-journaled, extended.
I spent an hour with the "Apple Geniuses" at the Apple Store and
they couldn't figure it out either, plus they say I'm the 3rd person
who's come in with this problem recently.
The Digi site says PT LE 7.1cs10 should work on OS 10.4.8. But it
don't! :) Not for me anyways, at this point.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Rick Novak.
