Default pioneer crackle

hi, Ive got a great old Pioneer sx424 amp wired via soundcard to my
laptop. fantastic sound , tho recently theres started to be the sound
of distant thunder from the speakers, esp. noticable when low passages
in music or between tracks. The volume pot is noisy when turned. could
the crackle mean Ive got to clean the pot , if so whats the best way to
do that?? if not where else could noise be coming from ?as its starting
to bug me , especially when everything else is so perfect with the
sound. Many thanks in anticipation of your help..Chezruss
