Plenty of parts: drivers, speaker building materials, transformers, tubes, etc. And a custom metal shop with shears, brakes and such who could bend up boxes promptly and reasonably. Since shears and brakes are not all that expensive and the skills can be taught to anyone-except electronics nerds, it seems-it should be pretty reasonable. You'd have loved my dad's chain of electronics stores back in the '50's.....Alvo Electronics throughout Central and Eastern PA. Provided all that for electronic Radio and TV repair, ham radio enthusiasts, and audio buffs...and carried/demoed/installed componenet hi-fi as well. Early in the game one store had an attached recording studio as well....direct-to-disk and Magnecorder equipped. |

With al due respect, I am serious. It sounds like you want a balls to
the wall SERVICE CENTER with a machine shop. That is a completely different industry. How many people do you personally know that would patronize this type of business enough to make it worth doing. How much square footage would be needed? What size city would this need to be done in? If it is a large market, what would the rent be on a place like this. What percentage of this citie's population would be remotely interested in a store like this.As an audiophile myself, I recognize that we are a VERY small percentage of the population. So give it a little nore thought , and I would be very interested in your thoughts on the viability of a veture like this. Bret Ludwig wrote: Rod wrote: What would you like to see in an audio store? Are you serious or kidding? I don't know what your experiences have
been, would you just like to listen and compare yourself? What if you're just looking for a single component, how would you know how well it will work in your system? With all due respect, no salesman wants to deal with a self proclaimed know it all. Sander deWaal wrote: "Rod" said: What would you like to see in an audio store? Also top posting, since you might not see my comments if they were
placed where they belong, namely *below* your questions: I was half serious, half kidding. I once worked in a hi end store myself, until the owner found out I sold people what they wanted instead of what brought the highest profit. I'm also a DIY-er, and have some knowledge of audio electronics. An ideal store would be the one where I could select and try out the components of my choice (within a certain range of course, one can't expect a store to have everything in stock), connect them myself, place the speakers and add some room treartment like tube-traps and such at my own experience. And where I could listen and change components at will for a few hours, with my music of choice, without bothering me every minute! And finally, I would like to have the option of trying a certain component in my own system at home for a limited period of time. Since I rarely, if ever, buy commercial audio/video products new or even in a store, it's a non-existing problem for me, actually. I build most of my stuff myself, and buy second hand gear and tweak it as I see fit. But that's not for everyone, I guess. Sorry to have bothered you with my view of things, just follow the "recommended components" list in Stereophile and all will be good. "Rod" said: Are you serious or kidding? ![]() "Soundhaspriority" wrote in message ... It is not viable as a brick-and-mortar operation. There are, however, web machine shops, and companies that fabricate circuit boards based upon their own proprietary, free, layout software. Perhaps a one-stop "go-to" for individuals who wish to make one-offs or or small runs. The territory, however, would have to be an entire continent. Nothing smaller could support it. It doesn't cost a lot of money to setup for simple 2 layer board fabrication. I used to work with a guy in college who did one off PCB layout and etch in his basement. Heres a kit for do it yourself. http://www.jdr.com/interact/item.asp?itemno=PCB-KIT The bigger hurdle is surface mount soldering for the do it yourselfer. There really isn't any low cost solder deposition, part place & reflow equipment out there. Applying rework process tools to whole cca assembly will work but is extremely slow and the quality/reliability of the result will be substandard. Using CMs is expensive as the solder stencil tooling and part placement programming is expensive. And you can't get one of components on tape and reel. ScottW |
