Big, serious Audio Question: can a 20wpc tube amp drive a pair of Quads? Which Quads? The original ESL ( 57 ) might do OK, I doubt if the 989 would come to life with your (Scott or Fischer?) amp. Also, remember that the 15 watts Quad II amps used heavy feedback around the output transformer (cathode windings) , thereby being able to deliver some current. Your average UL or pentode tube amp could get in trouble. I'm doing okay with 40 watts of solid state, so, maybe. The 40 watts figure in itself is quite meaningless unless the amp is able to maintain the same voltage in lower phase-shifting impedances. My PP KT88-in-triode amps are able to create a very nice sound quality in my Magnepans, but my hybrid MOSFET amp goes beyond that in terms of subjective loudness and bass extension (punch). I *know* that Maggies aren't Quads, but in my opinion Quads are a bit harder to drive with mere UL or pentode amps. Maybe PPP KT88 or KT90 in triode is the way to go, that would give you about 40 watts and enough damping to control the lower end. Maybe mr. Devil could enlighten us on what kind/configuration of amplifiers he uses? -- Sander deWaal Vacuum Audio Consultancy |

I made a pair of 40 watt monoblocs to drive the 989s at my office. KT88s sound stunning in my amps but lack bass extension and dynamic impact at loud output levels. I replaced them with KT90s, same cathode bias resistor (the bias current actually measured exactly the same as the KT88s!), and now I'm back in familiar volume output territory--that is to say, louder than I can stand, the way it used to be with solid state and 63s at my office. My valve amps (called 'TittyTats', note) replaced a 200 watt per side Rotel RB-1080 and / or Chord SPM1200C (both used at various times). The 989s now play substantially louder, don't cut out, and sound much better than I've ever heard them play anywhere else. I don't think weedy or pretty 'valve-sounding' valves will do the job. I've avoided using valve amps with Quads until now. I like big dynamic swings, and little valves don't seem capable of doing that with Quads. We're talking about a Scott LK-48 using 7189 tubes, which are close to EL-84s. Boon |

Hah! Take that! And that! You're flying toilets mean nothing to me! My amps, like my flying umbrella toilets with wings, are superior in every way to the **** you have in your system. Your amps are crap and couldn't drive a pair of crystal headphones without the transformer windings popping apart and catching fire. Your amps homosexually oscillate at a feminine 3K when they are in the company of fat, bald men. Your turntable plays records backwards, your house is a laundromat, you weave baskets in your spare time, wear flowery dresses and sandals and 'Oh, poo!' with your neighbours about the weather, and your hair is a pile of turds with bows in it. dCS? Quad? SME? It's all crap. Crap that belongs in your precious winged (pronounced wing-ED, not wing'd, you flowery ponce) toilets, flying through the ozone, and missing their targets by hundreds of miles. I am not impressed. Remember, I have the exact tonearm as you. I am almost as oscillatory as you. If I got the Quads, then it would be too feminine. So stick that in your Ring DAC and spin. Boon |

For many years, I used to drive a pair of Quad ESL-57's with a vintage toobed Fishe 400 receiver - 25 watts/channel - 4 7868 Pentodes. Plenty of volume and good dynamics. Actually, there was even enough power to drive these in combination with an M&K subwoofer specially designed to be used with original Quads (called "The Bottom End"), where the Fisher provided the power for the M&K as well ( run through a passive crossover matrix). Don't know how well the Fisher would have done with 63's or 988's, however. Been there, done that. Asked and answered. If iron knees killed (trademarked creative expression). A lot of people run Quads with 25-30 wpc, both SS and tubes, so I really wonder if 20 is going to make or break it. Like the Devil said, I should borrow another pair of 63s and see how it sounds. I think 988s are 87 or 88 dB sensitive, so I think that's right on the border. My Spendor SP100s are 90 dB sensitive and it's a perfect match, but the impedance stays fairly constant at 8 ohms. I think the Quads dip below 4 here and there. Boon |
