Default Which part to upgrade first ?

[rgmw]largie a écrit :

I managed to pick up "some bargains" when assembling my system (Denon
PMA-707, Mission 700 speakers & stands for £50 the lot) and have
happily used these for a while with a Technics SL-PG480 CD player. I'm
currently wondering which bit of the system I should upgrade first and
what sort of price I'd be looking at to see a significant improvement
anywhere.

System:

Technics SL-PG480 CD player
Denon PMA-707 Amp
Mission 700 Speakers (on floor stands)
Cable Talk 3.1 speaker cable
Cambridge Audio Arctic CD-Amp interconnect

Any comments gratefully received

Dave

Let's have a look to the thread "Spread of costs..." you will deduce
that if you have money to spend, you should put it in speakers.

In your case 90% of the improvement that you can wait from your
investment will come from new speakers and their correct placement in an
adequate listening room.

IMO speakers are where the best bang for the buck is. They are the only
part you really "hear." They are the weakest link in the audio chain.
I can't think of any other thing on the list that would actually make an
audible difference.

Thank you both very much for your input. As you've both said the
speakers should be the first thing replaced I'll take that as some
good advice and see what deals are around.

Thanks again for your time & trouble in replying to my post

No trouble, you're welcome.

So the first real investment is in a room
not speakers
it's a hell of a lot easier to change speakers than to change a room no?

Depends but I'm afraid that you are caricaturing my thought...
*Sometime* you can can incredible improvement with with the judicious
placement of a rug or curtains.
For this tweaking you can ask the support of Madam your wife. Typically
the kind of demagogic bearing which will increase the WAF of your
installation and let you hope huge further investments... :-)
Happy ?

In my time as an audio installer, I came across many listening rooms.
You wouldn't believe what some people do with their $50.000 + systems
sometimes.
Martin Logans flat against the wall, a hard stone floor, no carpets or
curtains, mirrors behind speakers.................
Those were the same people that were fanatical about upgrading to the
newest MIT cable or Isocoins the moment they read about it.

Placement and acoustics are the things where one can gain the most.
Most people simply don't realize this.

It's sad to see that this was mostly the case.
OTOH, one can't dismiss differences in cables etc. at first hand.

I agree with you.
But I was being kind of serious
In a no-holds-barred installation
I would first consider the actual
architecture
Of course my wife is an architect ...
Furnishing can help but I have seen some really bad rooms that were supposed
to have been designed for Home Theatre. Mostly of the stone glass and other
hard reflective surfaces variety.
