One of my most memorable music
moments: Wichita Jazz Festival
Outdoors Spring 1984
Sitting about 7th row on
the aisle listening to Ray
belt out "Georgia on my Mind",
grinning like he just won the
lotto, and rolling his head
side to side with a rhythm that
just soothed the soul.

RIP, Ray, you were one of a
kind.

Might be????

Ray Charles, in his prime, was bigger than life. Reagan, in his prime, was
a third-rate actor.

It was sad to see Ray Charles onstage in L.A. (where we saw Brian Setzer
together) a few years back - he didn't have his own band with him, was
attempting to do some major variations on his singing style for some old
favorite songs, which didn't work at all, and he was beginning to lose his
golden voice. It saddens me today to know that he only had a few years left
that evening.

I miss him - Ray Charles, that is.

True. But did Ray Charles defeat communism and bring equality, liberty and
fraternity to the teeming millions living in the totalitarian, godless,
savage societies behind the Iron Curtain?

Did he endorse the activities of Contras and Sandanistas in Nicaragua and
Guatamala in the name of democracy?

Did he arm Saddam Hussein to the teeth with weapons for the very purpose of
plurality and promoting freedom and peace throughout the Middle East? I
think not my friend.

Therefore, it may be time to re-assess Charles's legacy. And Reagan's.

That world (i.e. of those that admired and appreciated the talents of Ray
Charles) was/is a lot less confused, prejudiced, politically biased, and a lot
more objective than that supporting your presumed "hero".

influential in the 20th Century.

Indeed. I was unfortunate enough to attend a Ray Charles concert at the
Greek Theater in L.A. at a time when he had clearly lost his magic, and
sadly had but a few years to live. My wife and I even left early because it
was so sad to see such a great musician in his decline. Had we known how
little time he had left we would have stayed for the entire performance out
of respect for the man.

Fortunately, I attended a Ray Charles concert in 1963 when he was in his
prime, in Connecticut, with his own orchestra + "the Ray Charles singers".
It was sold out for good reason - that house was 'rockin' that night!!!!
Bought my first Ray Charles album that night - his "Country Hits" album -
the one that included the then currently popular hit: "You don't know me",
among other classics like "Georgia".

Sadly, those who missed Charles singing "What'd I say" in their youth
probably ended up like the poster you're responding to, Dr. Richman. Ain't
got no rhythm, ain't got no class.
