Heard mention of this stereo technique but am not
sure of the name and would like to learn more about it.

The Hamasaki Square is a surround technique (could be used in stereo if
the front and rear mics are summed) that uses four figure 8 mics in a
more or less square placement. The nulls of all the mics are pointed
toward the source so you don't get a lot of direct sound.

Another (and more useful method, in my opinion) is what's known as IRT
Cross where you use 4 cardioid mics in a square. It's basically a dual
ORTF setup but it's a little wider with a narrower angle (90 instead of
110 degrees).
