Digital Preamps
Hello everyone,
I'm running a Pro Tools HD2 system using Digi's 192io. I have a sort of long term lease on this studio, so I didn't make all the gear decisions myself, and have been trying to overcome a few obstacles. The problem that I am having now is that I have only two good preamps, one Avalon 737sp and one Grace 201. My other pres are the Focusrites that come in the Control 24 and a Presonus Digimax 96. The Focusrite pres in the Control 24 are not great, but they don't sound terrible to me, whereas the Presonus pres sound terrible on any application. Unusable to my ears. So I'd like to be able to use the 8 Focusrites from the Control 24 and my one Avalon and 2 Graces when doing large sessions, but the problem is that the 192io only has 8 analog ins. The rest of the ins, if one wants to record more than 8 tracks simultaneously, are digital. Which means, I really only have an 8 track recorder unless I want to use the Presonus's crappy pres. Is there a better box on the market that has multiple pres and digital outs (and one that doesn't cost more than a grand)? Or would a better master clock like the Big Ben possibly salvage something out of the Presonus (I've heard that it also sprinkles some fairy dust on PT recordings when used instead of the Digi 192io's internal clock). Or would I be better off linking my Motu 828mkII to the 192io for it's analog ins and running my Grace and Avalon through that (though I'd hate to denigrate good pres with MOTU conversion.) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Steve |

I'm not familiar with your gear, but does the digimax have line ins? Can you patch the Control24 pre outs to digimax line ins? Or does the C24 have digital outs that you can feed to a digimax or 192 i/o digital in? Mikey Wozniak Nova Music Productions This sig is haiku |

I don't think these work all the way up at 192, but I may be wrong. Regards, Ty Ford -- Ty Ford's equipment reviews, audio samples, rates and other audiocentric stuff are at www.tyford.com |

The 192-i/o has an expansion slot on the back. You can get a card to give you 8 more channels of a/d. That will help. There you go!
