Default Triggering problem

Hi Peeps,

I'm a newbie here, so please go easy on me ;-) I'm not sure if this
is the correct news group to post my problem, so if I'm in the wrong
news group, I would appreciate it if you could tell me what news group
I should be posting.

I've been playing for 40 years and just recently purchased a set of
electronic drums, mainly to allow me play without disturbing my family
and neighbors. Thus far, I'm very happy and impressed with the
overall sound, sensitivity, feel, and flexibility this instrument
offers. Seems electronic drums have come a long way. Though I still
wouldn't consider applying traditional brush playing to this type of
instrument. J

The problem I am having is a triggering problem between the "drum" pads
and "cymbal" pads. Mainly it's between the ride and high hat pads,
though sometimes the crash pad doesn't trigger correctly either.

The problem occurs when I strike the "drum" pad and the "cymbal" pad at
the same time. Usually the "drum" pad will trigger but not the
"cymbal" pad, it will trigger every other time (stirke). What causes
this problem and how can I resolve the conflict of the cymbal
triggering every other time when I strike both the "drum" pad and
cymbal" pad simultaneously?

If it helps, I'm using a Roland TD-12 module with Hart Dynamics Basic
Studio kit pads.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Look for a crosstalk parameter. It would effect how soon after a nearby
pad is struck, a particular pad can sound.

And if it's not a crosstalk issue, it could be the pad itself. New or used?
Try substituting a different pad & see if the problem goes away. Some pads
do go a bit deaf over time, and may trigger improperly.

best of luck,

Default Triggering problem

Hey! :-)

Mikey is right. The first thing you need to do is isolate the problem to
see if it's a faulty pad (or pads), intermittent cord, or if the problem is
actually with the trigger electronics. I would definitely look at the simple
things first and if I opened up the drum unit at some point, the first thing
I'd look at would be connectors and solder joints. Once you isolate the
problem to this degree and you have eliminated this simple stuff and the
problem persists, then you need to hire an experienced electronic tech or
send it to the factory. If you're so inclined and a DIYer, you can try
looking to see if there's some kind of buffer chip or outboard device
purposed for the trigger circuit, between the processor and the pads, and
test those. Sometimes MOSFET inputs on digital IC's, if damaged by
electro-static discharge will become intermittent and could account for the
kind of problem you describe. You could get a service manual / schematic,
but I'm guessing that you might not want to go that far. I usually work
without schematics now, but I've been fixing doo-dads for a long time. Look
for the simple stuff first!

Good luck!

Schler

Sounds like a problem I've had before with sustain pedals.

Since you're getting the "hit" on every other trigger, the controller is
sending the wrong type of message to the synth (probably a note-on then a
note-off) If it's a regular thing, it must be a problem with the midi data
the controller is sending. Try a hard-reset on the whole system if
possible.

MIDI implementation charts are complicated but hopefully you won't have to
resort to figuring it out in order to reprogram the controller. Roland's
customer support isn't too bad either, so you might save time just calling
them up. http://www.roland.com

Let us know how it goes,
Paul
